1987 Swing Away Bunk

Hello,

I have a 1987 Hi Lo purchased this year for $500. I am curious about the swing away bunk. The bunk lowers from the back and has hinges, but the front part of the bunk is only supported by two cables. There is no other type of reinforced support and the cables do not appear to able to hold any true weight.

Searching youtube and this forum I am only able to find bunk information on new campers which have support legs which come down from the bunk and rest on the outerwalls of the camper. Am I missing something?

Thanks,
Linsee

Linsee, the bunk SHOULD have a leg on either side to support its weight. Look for holes on each side of the lower half upper surface that pins on those legs would fit into. If you see the holes, the previous owner removed the legs.

They should be simple to make and add to your bunk. They hinge on each side of the bunk and swing down. They are held up when not in use by velcro on mine, and that velcro tends to come off which lets the legs flop down.

If you were to make them, you could judge their length by simply lowering the bunk, then raise the front (supported by cables) so that the bunk is level. This will put a bit of slack in the cables.

The cables are mostly there to help you raise the bunk to its stowed position, I think.

Go to the video manual and watch video #24 to see how the bunk is supposed to work. https://www.hilotrailerforum.com/f49/...-youtube-1233/

I will need take a look at the bunk when we get the camper back home. We are having someone take a look at the bearings on the trailer right now. I appreciate the help and guidance from both of you.
