Ladders - Hi-Lo camper travel trailer forum

Hi all,

Do any of you carry a ladder or step stool to access the roof while camping? If so, what kind? I've been thinking of purchasing something like this - very lightweight and tall enough to get on the roof should need be. Would fit nicely under the dinette table:

Come on Greg. You just hoist your spouse up there and stand on the ground and give very specific and detailed directions on what needs to be done! (and if you believe that let me sell you some ocean front property in Odessa, Texas!)

I usually just lower the top and climb up there over the propane tanks. Another nice thing about the HiLo is the ability to clean the windows and the top half of the exterior without a ladder.

Lower the HiLo and stand on a picnic table to climb on the roof. Had to do this once when the AC was very noisy. Had to replace the AC. This was done by our HiLo dealer.

I climb up from the tongue but I do pack one of these around. Catch it when it's on sale or with the 20% off coupon to save a few bucks.

Wayne, I'm afraid DW did not like your idea so that's not an option

Sam, seems like you would have to park pretty close to the picnic table to use it which may be difficult at some sites but I'll keep that in mind. Thanks!

Vannoch, guess I never thought about using the trailer tongue and propane bottles to step up there so I'll give that a try. I like that little stool, Ruben - looks pretty sturdy! Thanks for mentioning the battery tender. I do have one of these that I'm gonna put in my tool kit:

In NY state our campsites come with a movable picnic table. Every campsite that I have stayed with that is private has had movable picnic tables. With todays huge trailers and slides this is a good thing.

My experience has been that the tables are very heavy and it takes at least two strong people with good backs to move them. Our truck with a cap is always full of camping gear. No room for stolen merchandise of this size.

I've never found it necessary to get up there while camping. I'd use the tongue/propane tank access (with the top lowered) if needed. At home, I use a step ladder.

I would suggest that there is nowhere I would want to attach a ladder to my trlr.

I do keep a step ladder with me in the TV. Not for access of the trlr top, but for access to the TV.
My newest TV is a ford f350 and it is lifted. A comical site to watch my diminutive spouse that is 68 old years climb in to the truck. And she has no problem hustling this truck around.

When I do access the top, it is ALWAYS in the down position, so the tongue and propane bottle access would be the most likely.

Dang, I wish everyone would stop coming up with all of these extras that could be handy while camping. Pretty soon I won't have room left for my better half. I celebrated the 34 anniversary of my 39th birthday several months ago so I can't see myself climbing up on propane tanks to reach the top of my trailer. However, I do have a truck box on the back of my Tundra and with the truck parked close to the trailer I'm sure I could climb on top of the trailer by standing on the truck box. Thank goodness, I just found room for the spouse.

I am unable to climb like a young person anymore

and DH can't/won't climb either.

The thought process is that if we carry our kayaks on top of the UFO, one of us, me has to be able to get on the roof safely to get them up there and secured and to be able to get them down.
Carrying a ladder with us is not a good option.

Garry, dump the ladder and keep your spouse . . . you won't find anything handier than her!

So after long and thoughtful consideration. I decided not to mount a ladder onto the the UFO. I purchased a telescoping ladder since we will also need it to get our kayaks out of the loft in our shed.. and storage and transportation will not be an issue.
