Roof repair
 

I have a 1965 hi lo 1000. I am new to campers. Does anyone know what type of roof it has. What is the material? Mine is pretty wavy and has a low spot around the vent where it has a small leak. Do I take this roof off and replace? Not sure how to fix this. I may be new to campers but have found I can fix most anything. I have already installed a complete charging 12v converter system and 30amp service.

We had a small HiLo as you describe in the 80s. I believe it was an aluminum roof. What color is yours?

If it has had a leak then the wood framing may be damaged or rotten. In which case you might want to remove the ceiling and redo it. Is the whole top bad, or only places?

We currently have a '69 HiLo and it has an aluminum roof. They have to be "painted" occasionally with an aluminum roof sealant of the proper type. All RV stores carry something to do it. Also make sure that the roof seams (where sides join, any roof panels, and around all vents) are sealed with butyl tape. The reason for the sag on the vent is that there was already a leak there which caused the support wood to be damaged or rotted and the problem will continue until you repair it, and then stop the leak. You may not see the leak from inside, but you have one.

Yes. Agree paint with rubber roof coating. At least every 2 years.
Sorry but sounds like u have leak.
There is no simple solution. If u are overly eager and handy w tools and have a car port to store it under for working on it then u need to replace the top. Probably roof, insulation and ceiling. This is easiest and quickest way.
If u discover its just one isolated wet spot then maybe u can just fix that. See my old post.
Roof leaks can be death if u can't fix it.
Don't tow to junk yard yet. Get $50 roof seal and drive until it falls apart. Remove license plate and waive goodbye in the rear mirror. Haha. I had to do that w a utility trailer in the desert
With old campers we don't expect imortality. At some point u stop fixing things and assume trailer will die before that part becomes critical.

If you have a covered place to work, repairing a roof can take a bit of time but is not complicated, especially without an A/C unit. One forum member actually rented a storage unit for a month. You probably have aluminum judging by the model year. Undo the trim and screws around the top, take the outer roofing material off, then find and replace the rotted wood and any insulation. You may need to do the interior ceiling, but if you don’t see spots inside, that’s probably all right.

I just did half the roof on a KZ with leaks. Probably took about 20 hours of actual work, but mine was outside so only took the tarp off on days with no chance of rain. That really slowed things down.
