Gretchen - welcome to the forum.

I think you could use a farm jack that you might find at Harbor Freight to lift the corner that has the broken cable. You'd put the jack between the outrigger there and the top half and then lift the top a bit at a time jacking up the bad corner as you go to kind of keep things even.

But, I don't really think you HAVE to lift the top half much to replace a cable, it just makes it easier. You need to take off the interior trim strip at the top of the bottom half (inside) to expose the upper pulley. Then you can crawl under the trailer to thread the new cable over all the pulleys under there and then up the inside to the top pulley and down to the attachment point on the upper half.

Welcome to the forum.

While you have the top and bottom seperated check your seal to see if it needs to be replaced.

The best way is to use a jack and a 2 x 4 cut to length to support the top in thr raised position....2x4 is to be placed on the out rigger when top is up

Thank you and happy to say we got it fixed. Thanks to all for your helpful tips.

Parts for 2001 29' HiLo

Hello Everyone!
I just bought a FunChaser 29' HiLo and I need parts to repair the lift system.
The two links referenced in the thread are no longer active. Any suggestions?

Belificus - Welcome to the HiLo family! There are many links in this thread, which ones are you talking about? The one that describes how to repair the lift system works for me.

Are you possibly talking about the ones in Post #15? If so, nobody seems to be able to contact J&R or Midget at present. You can buy replacement cables at a home improvement store or hardware store, as well as eye bolts, thimbles, and swagging tools and crimping loop sleeves that you will need. I recommend 3/16" stainless cable.

Thank you!
I was looking for that 3/16" value.
Any thoughts on what length would be sufficient to replace all four?

And THANK YOU for the warm welcome.
I love to build things.

You're quite welcome. I'd get under the trailer and measure the cable length along the pulleys there for the longest run. Then add the distance up the side of the lower half and down to the edge of the top half. I'd probably add a couple feet to that for good measure. Every trailer size has it's own length requirement and when J&R was offering cables, they simply sold sets that would work with the largest trailers, as far as I know. A set was quite expensive and I'm sure you can save a lot of money making them yourself.

An alternate way to size them is to use the existing cables, once you take them off your trailer (but again, I'd add a couple feet).

Read through this entire thread carefully. There's lots of good advice in it from people who have done this DIY project. Use a ComeALong to stretch the cable once it is over the pulleys so that you get the attachment end at the proper length. If the cable is unstretched, it will probably be too long, but you won't be able to easily shorten it.
