Solar panel installation
 

Hi all,
I'm looking at installing solar on my 2008 19T. I'd like to install glass panels but have a concern about the weight at 16 pounds each. Mounting is another issue. If I use tape with no anchor screws, how will the thin aluminum roof handle any lift that may occur while on the road. On the same token, what is under the aluminum to anchor to? I sure would like to hear from anybody who's mounted glass panels. Obviously flexible panels are easy but I hate the idea of spending extra money on panels that have a fraction of the life expectancy.

My sentiments exactly. I am in the same boat (or rig) if you will. Members here have said the weight of the panels will not be an issue. Time will tell I think. I haven't heard from anyone who actually HAS THEM ON. Other than the flexible ones. I too don't want to go the flexible panel route. So the top is fiberglass over metal? With what styrofoam insulation? It seems like the installation might be easier because you can lower the roof but there may be issues because of the roof lowering as well? Would love to hear from someone who has done this.

I think it would be a must to balance out the panels on the roof? Equal distribution. Although the Peinguin A.C. is up there on mine and that weighs 100 lbs. My roof looks really solid and sturdy and the fact that the Hi-lo lowers while on the road really helps?

My roof is aluminum, pebble finish with a white coating of some kind. I don't know what's under it but I sure would like to find out.

Under the aluminum is a steel framework/foam insulation and interior and exterior sheathing. Some Hi-Lo's also have rubber roofs.

There's a great thread about JackandJanet's 200 Watt Solar install (now 300 watts). It's a mod that I plan to undertake once I get the higher priority items tackled.

We just got back from an extended trip to Great Basin and Bryce Canyon. My 300 Watt solar panels continue to work perfectly. Did not have to use the generator at all. Were gone for 11 days total.

There IS plywood under the metal skin on my roof. I THINK it's 1/2" ply. That's not a whole lot to hold a lag screw, in my opinion. If I wanted to screw panels on, I'd open up the overhead ceiling so that I could use bolts, fender washers and nuts on the plywood. My tape has worked fine so far. And, the panels show no deterioration.
