What is a better surge guard unit, the surge guard brand or the progressive brand?

Have you had electrical surge problems at RV parks in your hi-lo ?

I guess this is a potential problem, but those surge guards are mighty costly, aren't they? We don't use "civilized" campgrounds much, but when we have, we've never had any problems with surges.

I don't have a surge guard either, but if you add up the cost of replacing the circuit boards in the fridge, water heater, and converter, the surge guard price may look much better. Maybe I had better start shopping.

No I haven't had any problems yet but after reading a few horror stories I feel somewhat compelled to offer the ransom price to get one.

This is an older post but important and valid.

I talked with a guy at the CG I stayed at last weekend who has the Progressive model, with the remote monitor unit. His trips alot, he also thought "I don't have trouble at the campgrounds I stay at..." The monitor tells you the incoming voltage and trips when too low or too high and doesn't come back on until voltage stabilizes for 2 minutes.

He stated that he was really concerned that it was not working right when he first installed it because of just how many times it does trip. He called the company and talked to the owner who just happened to answer the phone. He said the monitor is telling the story reading the actual incoming voltage and you probably never noticed the issue before because most things inside the RV are running off the battery anyway, but your converter is taking a beating all the time. He said the voltage dropped below the 104V threshold many many times.

All things considered and the fact that I will be living full time in mine for almost the next year, I would rather just install one and protect what I have.

I'm buying and installing the Progressive model... he also said the ones that you plug into to shore power and then plug the RV into get stolen ALOT!!!

It will be installed in the power cord access door on the back wall with a new shore power cord (mine is pulling off the end)...

One of our club members was staying in a campground in Memphis, TN when their surge protector got fried. It saved the electrical system of their HiLo. Don't know what brand they had, but they did get it replaced immediately. It was the portable type, not the wired in type.

The Progressive unit has replacable cards, not sure about the portable units... the Prograssive unit also has a "bypass" switch if it does fry one of the cards... but if it did fry a card, would I really want to bypass the unit? Maybe I'll just carry a spare card...
