Riki, Nobody in the previous posts, which were all good info, mentioned that the top needs to be in the down position before getting on the roof.

Your extension cord should never get hot to the touch-thats a sure sign its to light a gauge for the current load.

Also you want to uncoil the cord to prevent that heat from heating the rest of the cord.

What gauge wire is your cord? Typical cords are 16 take. Better/heavier gauge cords are noticeably more expensive.

KnottyRig, I'm not using an extension cord, at least by my definition. The trailer is plugged into our home 20 amp outlet using the long heavy power supply cord that comes with the trailer. It's attached in a compartment on the outside of the trailer. The A/C has it's own cord that I pull out of a compartment in the bedroom and plug into an outlet by the floor. Both installed by the manufacturer.

Got up on the roof yesterday, removed the shroud, and blew out everything. No improvement in the temp of the air coming out of the A/C. I do have a question. My husband called around a little to see what it would cost to have it serviced and what they did. They made it sound like they did pretty much what we just did, i.e. clean the filters and blow out the coils etc. If that's the case, it sound like we're going to need a new A/C.

Caryl, if a reputable service company checks the unit, they ought to be able to tell if the coolant is low and needs to be recharged. I think that would be cheaper than a new unit? Of course it's possible these things are sealed and can't have coolant added, in which case my suggestion is pointless. But, I think it's something you can ask them about.

Well.cleaning is just the first step - just to make sure the problem isn't a blocked coil.

If cleaning doesn't fix it, then service is in order. Service will include checking state of charge and that the electrical components (compressor, blower motor, capacitors) are working correctly.

Something as simple as a bad start capacitor could keep it from working.

They're all serviceable - for units that lack service valves they can be added with a simple clamp-on piercing valve that costs about $5, and any AC service tech would have.

All that said, it would be good to know what a replacement unit costs -.you don't want to spend too much repairing an old unit.

Keep in mind that if you have the dealer install then you get a warranty.

If you install it yourself, you still have the mfg's warranty. It is not hard replacing an a/c.
