We have an 1983 Hi Lo and need to get the propane to work on the Domestic frig. We have used it for years and it is not working now. Is there a trick that we don't know? What do we need to fix it?

I admit, I don't have to run my refer on propane often, but whenever I buy or sell a Hi Lo, I ensure the refer will run with gas. I usually turn on the gas, light the stove to ensure there IS gas. Then, I light the refer. It usually takes a few minutes to get a flow. The igniters take over and light it up. If not, I inspect the chamber to ensure a critter didn't take up residence, ensure gas is flowing using a Bic candle lighter. If that works, it's the igniter (caution--those igniters pack a punch!). If I can't get that to work, I let a pro check it out.

Could be several things going on. Is the trailer level? That can affect operation.How old is the propane regulator? That can affect it as well. Or could be the fridge is at end of life (hopefully not)!

I'd turn the gas on and crack open the connection behind the fridge slightly. Once you smell gas tighten it up again. After it settles for a while get someone to turn the fridge on so it lights itself. Easy way to tell if its working is to touch the coils on the back of the fridge. They will start getting hot well before the fridge starts getting cold. You can usually tell if its working within a few minutes or so.

Depending on how old the fridge is it may have a manual lighting pilot, a push button pilot lighter, or an electronic controlled pilot. I suspect it is one of the first two. In any case you can try to light it with a lighter. If it doesn't light look to see if the orifice is plugged or the the burner unit is plugged by insects. The orifice can be removed gently and soaked in alcohol to clear it. DO NOT try to open it with a wire because it can mess up the opening. There may be a thermocouple as part of the pilot that could be bad as well. Have you secured a copy of the owners manual for the fridge?
