Talking Recommendations for Canada

The wife and I are going to the Calgary Stampede in July. Can someone recommend a good campground? We'll be in the Calgary area for 5 nights.

Also, our travels in getting to Calgary go up the Michigan Pennisula to Sault Ste. Marie. Is it worth going north of Lake Superior to Thunder Bay or should we stay in Michigan and head west across Wisconsin and Minnesota. If we go to Thunder Bay, what is the Canada highway to Winnipeg like?

Any thoughts would be appreciated. We eventually plan to make our way to Vancover and the Pacific Northwest.

Can't help with the places you mention, we have been to Canada many times and the highways are as good as the US. You probably know that you now need a passport. Do not take a hand gun to Canada it will be confiscated and you will probably never see it again. Hand guns are against the law to own there.
Be prepared to have ever inch of your TV and trailer searched. You may get a nice boarder person and it will go smooth. Last time we got a smart *** young man that even dumped out the dirt laundry and took the frozen food out of the freezer, it took us almost an hour to put stuff back as he left everything the way he dumped it. Main item they look for is a hand gun.

Default Going to Canada

We stopped going to Canada because it can take you three hrs to go through customs. You can also consider an enhanced drivers license that would be cheaper. All the bridges in the Niagara Falls,Ny can be backed up for miles. Can't really complain because yrs. ago the $ diff. was in our favor and we shopped and purchased gas. Now the Canadians come over to shop in droves. It helps our sales tax revenue.

Going around Lake Superior is beautiful. The Canadian side is less built up, long vistas. I live in Duluth & traveled to T-Bay every couple of weeks to fly to the Tar Sands. I have camped in Canada, fuel & food can be expensive. Alberta has many lovely campgrounds,
book early though. Hiway 2 is a nice route, north through the Sweetgrass crossing. I have not had trouble crossing, make it clear your are a tourist, they don't like guns, and may ask about seeds, etc. We went to the Vancouver Olympics in 2010 with our HiLo and had a great time.

The Highway from the Manitoba border to Thunder Bay is a 2 lane highway, there are places to pass but there is alot of highway where you cannot pass, if you go as far as Thunder Bay you must stay at the camp ground at Kakabeka Falls, it's called the Niagara of the north, the falls have a 103 foot drop and it's very beautiful when there is alot of water going over it, i'm going back there in the morning and will take the time to check out the falls this weekend

Default Going to Cananda

Good to know we were not alone went over there ten years ago had a full size van with camping items in it got searched every where pulled the lining out on the sides in the back. Looked in all the camping stuff. Had military ID when we asked them why they toll us they were looking for guns. We told we knew not to bring them, scared our then 10 year old daughter. Made us feel like we were doing something wrong. Now I dont know if I want to go Cananda to have that happen again.

We crossed many times over the Peace bridge at Niagara Falls before in an SUV for fishing trips to northern Ontario, before the hand gun ban became law, with no problems except for long lines of traffic. When we crossed with the trailer it was in North Dakota, no lines just a few cars but they gave us the third degree. It wouldn't stop me from going again, just be prepared for the worst, Canadian people have always been friendly.
