Two mods worked out

This is kinda like a two fold mod. About a year ago, I looked at how unbecoming my cap rail was (you know the one, it's on top of the bottom!).Always a bit confusing, but we gotta remove them to lube the pulley and cable. We'', I machined matching pieces of vinyl sold at the big orange box and installed them, they look great and easily cleaned.
Today, boredom struck, and I decided to cable lube and realized all those screws gotta come out. I should just drill a hole and oil thru those hole. Better idea popped in my head!Attachment 6429

This is what you purchase, usually in a pack, you need 8
Attachment 6431
but this is all you need. drill bit size is determined by size of support hole purchased. ensure the fit is tight!
Attachment 6432
Once installed, they should align with the outside and inside of the cable.
Attachment 6433Oil as normal, (I use sewing machine oil)

I'm sure this will work without having to replace the cap rails, but I had already done that. All I have to do now is clean up the marks. even DSO likes the end product, maybe she'll lube underneath...NOT!

Clever idea, Tree! I may have to do something like that too. It's especially hard to get the cap strip in the bathroom out.

Thanks Jack.
With the hole supports, the oil shouldn't stain the wood, but NO guarantees! Truth be know, I put the first cap in place, oiled and waited a few mins, pulled the cap up and everything was prefect, so I'm happy. Now if I can just figure out how to do the underside.

Tree,

You state, "This is what you purchase, usually in a pack, you need 8". What is it I need to purchase? I see the pic but don't know what that part is called.

Thx

piperjim, Very good question. These are those little pins that hold shelves in a cabinet or shelving unit. The "barrels" fit into the holes drilled into the wood and the pins into them. The "barrels" prevent the pins from deforming the wood. I used the barrels because they are the right thickness for the cap boards. I had re-shaped VINYL boards the same as the original caps.
A package usually contains four or eight of each.
This mod means we don't need to remove those cap boards. When I replaced mine, I moved the screws a little bit for new purchase into the metal, making ALL boards solid.

Tree:

Thanks! I was thinking they went to the little pull chains that we find on ceiling fans! LOL!

That is a nice idea, I’ll have to work on this too.
