Awning on hilo campers, Question
Are the awning fabric standard? Or are they shorter because of the shorter awning arms, and where can you buy them?
Benbar |
I believe they ARE standard. I bought some attachment hardware online about 4 years ago to replace parts of mine that I'd broken. I don't know of a good source for awnings offhand, but I bet an internet search would yield results.
You could also ask JR Repair for help. |

I believe they are shorter in length than a standard travel trailer awning. Look for a tag on the awning material and get the numbers from it. I think the tag is near the top attachment point. But I have a bad memory.

Rich, what are we talking about? Are you saying the roller is shorter or is it that the length of the fabric on the roller is shorter?
I suspect I was confused in my answer to the OP's question and am sorry if I gave a misleading answer. Good grief! I just re-read the original post and found I WAS confused! Senior Moment again! How the heck did I miss the word "fabric"? I AM sorry! - Jack |
From the groove at the top of the camper to the first groove in the roller is 81 inches, 3 1/2 to the second groove, then a 7 inch valance, just went out and measured. Boy is it cold out.

Not to worry, Rich. I completely misunderstood the original post. *DUH*.

I'm sure the length (from top to roller barrel) is unique to Hi Los. Mine is definitely a replacement and if I FULLY deploy the awning, the support rods come apart. I've measured and found the fabric is about one foot too long.
I've thought about replacing the fabric, but shortening it before install. Tough task, but my Huskie sewing machine can handle it. Bottom line for me, don't fully deploy! |
Thanks for all the responses, Now i know the Awning front to back extended is 6ft 9 inches and a 7inch valance.
Thanks Bigbar |
I replaced my awning a few years ago with fabric only from an ebay seller. The fabric was regular length but I chose to leave it as such because, when the 'always exposed' section wears (as they all do), I'll cut the excess at that time & hopefully, double the life of my awning.

A caveat, Bigbar. If you take this route, your awning will (just about) extend fully but I don't recommend it as the bottom awning supports may bend inwards as mine did. So, if you're not fussed about the fabric's fringe being visible, just extend to the Hi-Lo length.

Awning repairs.
We got caught in a wind storm and it bent the arm of our carefree awning. I had the exploded parts for Carefree. They had the parts I needed. I called them a second time and they sent some small hardware N/C. Youtube has a video on awning repair. When we had our walls torn apart we were asble to reinforce where the awning bracked goes into the exterior side of the HiLo. Apiece of sttel was bolted in. That way the awning bracket had a good "stud" area to be firmly attached too.

Sam, our front top bracket has only one screw (came to us from the original owners that way, the screw was sheared). I often worry that it's gonna go one windy day. Looks like I should do the same.

Carefree Awning !
Hey Sam, i didn't know carefree had made awnings for Hilo's. I thought they were all A&E by Dometic. Have you got part numbers you could share. I don't know the difference, i'm thinking the Dometic is heavier gauge metal and the roller tube is bigger in dia.

My awning for 1990 25ft. Classic.
I think different years had different awning manufactures. In later years our dealer told us HiLo bought the toilet, awning,AC as a package deal from Dometic. Supply companies merged. I can't get into my HiLo right now as it is raining/snowing like cats and dogs. Take a picture of your HiLo awning and hopefully someone can identify the brand. Here is a post by Sam Shields retired HiLo service advisor. Re ataching awning bracket 7-31-2010 . This tells you how to make a sturdier repair.
