Question Hello NEWBIE Here!!!

Hello all. I'm going tomorrow to look at a 1980 Hi Lo Funchaser. Just wanted to ask everyone what exactly to look for as far as problems. Not new to the camping world but very new to Hi Lo. Funny as they were made here where I live about 30 miles away in Bellville / Butler Ohio. Thank you in advance

Welcome to the forum! Print this out and take it with you. These are the major things to lookout for when buying a trailer.

This was taken from NDgent's post here on the forum. It is a great go-by list. You can do a search of "thinking about buying" and find his post to read it first hand.

Basically, start with the visual items –
1. Exterior
• Look for water stains and discoloration on inside walls and around ceiling anywhere vents, skylights, windows, etc. exist.
• Push and prod with your hand on the inside walls for soft spots (which could indicate a water leak and a damaged or rotten interior wall).
• Check for bubbles in the wallpaper (a sign of delimitation or water intrusion)
2. Interior cleanliness of the unit-
• Look for water stains and discoloration on inside walls and around ceiling anywhere vents, skylights, windows, etc. exist.
• Push and prod with your hand on the inside walls for soft spots (which could indicate a water leak and a damaged or rotten interior wall).
• Check for bubbles in the wallpaper (a sign of delimitation or water intrusion)
3. Test appliance functions –
• lights
• fans
• refrigerator
• air conditioner
• heater
• water pump
• range hood
• stovetop
• oven (if equipped)
• microwave (if equipped)
• stereo (if equipped)
4. Lift System-
• Does the unit raise and lower properly
• Check the lift system for hydraulic leaks (puddle under the trailer)
• Check the lift cables to see if they are in good shape and not frayed
• Check the seal between the upper and lower body halves for tears or damage
5. fill the tanks to the top and check for leaks
6. Battery
7. Solar Panel (if equipped)

Unhappy

Thank you everyone. It was a mess. They couldn't test anything then I saw a huge water leak far right corner where the bunk was. Fridge didn't work etc. 5he roof scared me big time. It needed a serious overhaul. For $3000 it wasn't worth $500

Default welcome to the forum

So glad you didn't buy this piece of junk!! Water damage is something to run away from. Use the check list. I'm sure the right one will come along for you. Maybe JR in Ohio has a reconditioned one for sale. What is your tow vehicle? Are you looking for a Towlite or a Classic (heavier)? What length were you considering?

I'm up in the air about it right now. I just want something decent that we can camp in. 1/4 ton 4x4 Chevy. I think I'm gonna take a break from the search right now. I've even looked at all sorts of other TT. It amazes me how people are so unprepared to sell their units. "Does the water work? I don't know. Does the fridge work? I don't know. ..etc" If you went to buy a car and they said they didn't know if it would start or not and wouldn't show one way or the other" no one would just say, "Ok I'll BUY IT!"

Good luck in your search. We bought our new 2008 Towlite from an Ohio dealer next to the production plant and towed it back to VA. We are now trying to sell it and I tested everything. We had a TV/CD/DVD player installed by the dealer CraigSmith and I never could get it to work. Now that everything is digital vs analog I just used the TV for DVDs. I was hoping it would stir some interest on this site and Craigs list but it hasn't . Guess I'll drop the price but I am not site savvy to edit my post. Keep looking, you will find one.

When we bought our HiLo I had been looking for many months but had not found one in good condition or one at a price I was willing to pay. Had my 32' travel trailer ready to head to Alaska in 2 weeks. Looked at craigs list one night and my 2805C had just been posted in Cape Cod with many pictures an at a good price. Called the owner and he agreed to hold it for me till I got there the next day. Got there bought it and towed it home the next day. Have put over 40,000 miles on it and love it. Keep looking

Smile Newbie

Hi all. I live in a small town in Onario Canada. I purchased a 2009 mojo Hilo in 2011. They only made a few of these models but I love it. People come to look at it all the time as it is so futuristic looking. My wife Sandra and I have only camped in Ontario hut there are many gorgeous Provincial Parks here. I am certainly looking forward to this forum.

Hi Sam. I talked with you when I first joined this forum. Would you have any idea where I could possibly get parts for my hilo mojo seeing as how there were only 12 made. Larry

Hi Sam. Thanks for responding. I bought this trailer used a few years ago and we love it. However, I just realized something is missing in the rear sliding mechanism when I lower and raise the back end. There is nothing that secures the rear left and right wing to the guide bar on the sides of the trailer. The wings are free floating when I raise and lower it but it seems to me it should somehow ride along (and be attached) to the side guide rails. I have taken a few photos to show you but it is hard to explain and photograph because of the tight area. On one inside wing, there is a steel plate and on the other wing the plate is gone. Can you tell me what it is missing and if you have any of these parts in stock any longer. Sorry but i can't seem to attach the photos I took on my iPhone.
You are my last hope. Thanks ,Larry

Larry, if I'm reading this right, your saying what sounds like the guide block are missing. Are there guide rods (or where there) still there on the sides of the trailer? If not, there should be holes where they were. To see the guide blocks better, you need to remove the rail cap attached to the top of the bottom wall. This is also done to access the cable pulleys during maintenance. If you DO remove these rails, go ahead and oil those cables. Guide blocks are avail from Midget. just google Hi Lo Parts.

Hi Treeclimber. Are you talking about my type of trailer which is the mojo of which I am told they only made 12 of ? I think you are on the right track however. I do have curved guide rails which are secured to the sides of the trailer. However I feel that the large left and right wings of my trailer which lower and raise, should be somehow connected to those guide rails. If I could figure out how to add a picture to the requested URL they are asking for a could show a photo.
