Atwood water heaters do not require an anode rod while Suburban water heaters do. It is because of the different tank construction. Atwood tanks are coated on the inside and Suburban tanks are not.

Another quick fix is to use 1/2 pipe foam insulation. Get it at Lowe’s or Home Depot. Just stuff it in from the outside. Have to remove it prior to lowering.

Zimirken, the soot build up sounds like an insect has built a web or nest in the gas tube to the burner. This causes improper flow of propane to the burner. Thus causing the soot problem.
