15T or 1509T Dimension Details

Hello, I am a first time poster who is looking to buy a 15' Hi-Lo, I'm not sure if that is 15T or 1509T. I have a lead on a 2009 model in Columbus, OH but I'm searching for any 15' model, the newer the better but under $13,000, and the closer to southern Maryland the better.

My first question, is there a dry bath in a 15'? Next I will explain my "different" towing situation, but to summarize I have a few questions on the dimensions: how wide and tall is it when collapsed? When raised, how tall is it and what are the widest points at 20" above the ground (e.g. width across tops of tires or lowest part of fenders)? What is the ground clearance? Can a Hi-Lo be transported in a partially raised position, possibly with support under the upper section?

Here is my towing setup: I currently have a 2011 Cozy Traveler 14' conventional TT. I have used it for 5 state park trips but now I want to combine it with a 32' gooseneck car hauler and a Jeep Wrangler which I pull with a diesel Dodge 2500. So I hooked the camper to my Jeep, pulled the camper up on the car hauler, and measured 13' 10" to the top of the A/C unit! That is a lot more overpass risk and wind resistance than I care to deal with, and the camper on the ground already catches more side wind than two Jeeps on a car hauler. So I'm hoping to sell my camper and buy a 15' Hi-Lo to cut down the height and wind resistance, or selling my truck, hauler, and camper to buy an older class C motor home which I'm afraid will wear quickly with 5,000+ lbs. of Jeep and 16' car trailer behind it.

So with a hauler/camper combo, I have a 4,000 pound camper weight limit which I think will not be a factor with the short length. The 15' length is fine, as the spare will go between the car hauler ramps, but I have only 83" width between the hauler fenders which are approximately 18" higher than the deck. Could I transport a Hi-Lo partially raised, maybe supporting the outer shell with wood blocks over the reinforced hauler fenders? Or perhaps I would end up putting a front hitch on my Jeep, raising the camper to reduce the width and pushing it to the front of the hauler (backwards, with the spare in front), and then lowering it for the trip?

Thanks in advance for any measurements and advice!

Neal and Bev have posted the brochures for the last number of years in the reference library. Here is the link to the 2009 brochure in PDF form. Just click on the link then click on the second link to view the PDF. It will give you the basic dimensions for the 1509T as you scroll down. https://www.hilotrailerforum.com/f52/...2009-hi-lo-11/

Thank you Fireballsocal! That is a start. It shows the width as 94" and I'm assuming that is the "maximum" width, that is with the upper half collapsed. I'm going to call the seller back tonight and I'll post whatever details that I get. They put the camper in RV storage and hopefully have easy access.

A 94" (8 ft) width is the "standard" width for trailers. Yes, it is the exterior width when the top is lowered. My 17 ft trailer is the same.

There IS a "wide-body" size (110"?) that is offered in BIG trailers. but the 15-ft trailer will not be that width.

DO NOT try to tow a Hi-Lo in a raised, or partially raised condition. It needs to be collapsed.

As far as ground clearance, you can judge it from a side view. You just need to know the tire size. Be aware though, the black and grey water tank outlet hangs down a bit and can catch the ground if you hit a deep dip that puts the trailer wheels below the roadbed (think of a deep gulch across the road).

mhenry,

If overall width is important to you, during the search for your perfect Hi-lo be advised that Hi-Lo did make a few models that were wider than 94". I don't think that applies to their shorter models, but its a REALLY good question to ask when checking these things out.

The Classic models were 100" wide. And, on all models you must add the width of the awning and anything else that protrudes from the sides. So if you have a Towlite that is 94" and it has an awning it will be more like 98". The range fan vent adds about 2" more if there is one on the opposite side.

With 83" between the fenderwells I don't think that the axle will fit between them will they?

Looking for a 15ft HiLo

If you find a HiLo that you like you could always have an RV tow service bring it to you. The 15T-T stands for towlite -lighter materials. A few weeks ago we had some fine dinning with our HiLo camping club. Our salesman Chuck Carlson mentioned that he had three brand new HiLo Towlites in stock. I'm sure he had a 15T. Thank you everyone for the quick replies! To take a step back for a moment, I am going through all this because of fear of prematurely wearing out a V-10 class C with towing 5,500 lbs. What is more of a factor to towing limits with a MH -- is the weight capacities of the chassis and rear axle, or the power and cooling available to the engine and transmission versus drag?

Sorry, back to the Hi-Lo – I received more measurements from the seller and it is not a Classic model, as it is 94” wide. Thank you to JackAndJanet, JMDoering, and RichR for the lookout on that! With the seller’s measurements it sounds like the fender clearance should not be a problem -- my hauler fenders are 9.5" tall, the ground clearance at the widest part of the lowered box is 22", and the lowest ground clearance inside the fenders is 12". So in theory I could just pull the whole thing centered over the fenders, but as Jack pointed out there are protruding sewer connections and valves at an unknown height. Also are there leveling jacks beyond 83” wide that would hit the hauler fenders?

The lowered overall width is 94" but from outside to outside of tires is 78", so that covers vannooch’s point about the axle fitting between the hauler fenders. I also measured my existing camper and got the same 78” – I think I have heard of that width as a standard, and also the 94” wide box sounds like the outside of my hauler fenders. The awning brackets are another concern (thanks RichR), but from what the seller described, the brackets stop at least 12" high which would clear the hauler fenders.

I also need to see the minimum ground clearance as the Jeep pulls the camper up the ramps at a certain approach angle. And the departure angle too -- will the camper scrape its bumper or sewer connections on the ground when the Jeep goes up the ramps? I could overcome this with longer ramps but now this is getting complicated… well more complicated that is :-).

JackandJanet: thank you for the warning, I thought raised would be a bad idea with all the bumps and vibration straining the lift cables.

Sam: thanks for the lead! I just called them and they sold the last 15T last week. But I will keep an eye on their web site. Good point on the delivery too, I may do that, I don’t want to sell my existing camper until I see that the 15T will actually fit. I paid $1 per mile for the Cozy Traveler delivery, do you have a guess on pricing the consumer/non-manufacturer deliveries?

Mike, supporting the top on 2x4's or something similar would take the strain off the cables, but the side loadings on the raised structure would probably be damaging. The top is really quite heavy, and it would be twisting and top loading (side to side) the top of the lower half under road movement. In addition, the top itself would no longer be supported well in side-to-side movement and it could sustain damage too.

You can also look on ebay. I have seen many on ebay over the years. Infact a friend of mine just listed their 2007 17ft Hi-Lo on E-Bay today. It is a very nice unit and very well cared for.

Looking for Information

New to the group and also to learning information on which models and years of the Hi-Lo's are lighter in weight. We have a Dodge Grand Caravan and still need to decide on which type of trailer hitch to buy.

Any information, links, etc. would greatly be appreciated.

Thank you
Chili Rose New Mexico

PS I hope that I posted this in the right place, some of the posts seemed dated 2010

hilltool 09-26-2012 10:17 PM

chilirose

If you check the library section you will find brouchures on the different years and sizes and that should give you the information you want. I would check carefully if you are hauling with a GRAND CARAVAN as hi-los run heavy. I don't know what the weight limits are for towing ----but a grand caravan is not often thought of as a heavy duty-ish tow vehicle.
