31' HiLo
 

Maybe I can refine my question regarding the 31' HiLo. Is there anyone pulling that long of a HiLo and can you tell me what you pull it with and how you like it? We are interested in it but hesitant due to the weight, 6100 with out having it packed up with stuff. Our vehicle has a 5.7 liter engine, Hemi. According to our research we have enough power to pull it. What do you think? Thanks any suggestions are appreciated.

I have a 29b and several of the Gulf Cost Hilo Club members have 31' Hilo's. I pull with a Ford F250 diesel, others pull with a suberbon or other 3/4 ton tow vechals. The larger and heaver trailers tow better with the heaver tow vech. A half ton truck is just not enough truck. At one time I pulled my trailer with a 1/2 ton Dodge and it just was not enough truck. It was ok on flat land but not in hill's. I also think you should use a brake controler and a full hitch package.

I pull my 29L with a 2002 Ford Excursion. It has a 5.4L gas engine with a 4:10 rear end. I have no problems with this combo.

We have a 355 rear end axil housing (sorry, however you say that) and the vehicle is only a 1/2 ton. We are getting so many mixed oppinions. Thank you for your responses.

Maybe we should just get a pop-up - But the prices are very high, we can buy a HiLo for the price of a pop-up. I've read many comments on this forum and learned a lot. I appreciate the response I received to my question. We are having a difficult time making this decision. This 31' we are looking at is a 2000, in very good condition with a slide out. But the weight is such a concern. Our mechanic says we can pull it with no problem but my husband and I tend to lean towards the person who responded to me that had a Dodge 1/2 ton and did not do very well on hills. Well, should we make a decision before the snow flies that would be nice, would like to get at least one trip in before bedding everything down for winter.

I think you may be pushing the envelope to the limit. If you are only doing short trips on relative flat highways you may be OK, but beyond that you may be asking for problems. Fully research your tow vehicle, look it up on Trailer Life's towing rating guide to see what it is rated for. Trailer Life Magazine: Follow the Road to Adventure The gross weight on a 31' is close to 8000 pounds. Take 80% of your vehicle's tow rating and see how it matches up to the Hi-Lo. Hopefully you will have a winning combination.

Have you looked at smaller Hi-Lo's? You should have no trouble towing a 27ft.

Wow, thank you for the replies.
The the 31' is appealing not only because it is a Hilo but the price is very reasonable. Yes, we've looked at the 27' and the price is so much higher.

To RichR, thank you for that web site, that is valualbe information. I don't think we will get the 31', we had to make our decision by tomorrow - thanks for helping.

Just my 2 cents - we have 2506C dry weight is about 4300#'s I think.
Pulled it with a F-150 with the 5.4 V8. It was ok until we got into the
mountain passes of Colorado. It was working pretty good (the high altitudes
might be a factor also). Anyway, long story short, we now have a F-250
V10.
