safety bar: locked or unlocked?

Hi,
How do I visually tell if the safety bar is locked or unlocked? & How far should the release cable inside the door by the switches pull out when it's unlocked???
Thanks so much,
Monica

Trying to visually check it is difficult. It requires crawling under the trailer and looking to see if it is in place. Usually, when you raise the top you will hear the bar drop into place and may see the cable move in a little. You can tell if the bar is in place by pressing the down button, the top should drop only a small amount before stopping. If it stopped raise the top back up to the normal up position. When lowering press the up button to be sure the top is up all the way. Then pull the release cable until it stops then hit the down button. The cable may move 2 or 3 inches when pulled.

I agree with RichR. Although, my cable pulls out less than an inch when I'm preparing to lower the top, and of course the red light next to it comes on to indicate the bar is now disengaged.

I am having trouble lowering the top. The cable does not pull no red light. We have a new battery. Any thoughts. It’s a 1990. We just got it and we no nothing about it or camping. We just love the camper

Welcome to the forum!

The "Search" function on this forum is your friend. Here's a link to a thread about a problem similar to yours with some useful suggestions:

Do you have an Owner's Manual? If not, you can find one, or a close model year, at the forum home page, near the bottom of the page under the "Library" section.

Have you watched the operation videos on YouTube? Here's one on raising/lowering, other videos can be linked from this one.

Have you lowered it previously, that is, do you know the correct position of the switches, etc.?

Possibilities: Bad lowering solenoid, bad wiring, bad switch, bad battery (doubtful if new, but it's not unheard of to buy a defective battery), binding safety bar, operator error!

Good luck, let us know what you find.

I have no safety pull switch. Am I in trouble?

Cindy, I don't understand your question. Do you mean a "safety bar cable release"? I seem to recall that earlier model trailers did not use the cable system, but had a light that showed when the safety bar was engaged and some other method to release it. Does this sound like yours?

I see what I think is a safety bar underneath but it is attached to nothing. No switch, no cord. Does this mean it might fall down? Guess I need an RV tech with hi lo knowledge

Try raising it, pull cable, then try lowering. Your top maybe settling a bit and resting on the safety bar. Try the procedure below.
