What did I get myself into?
 

I have been looking for a camper for several months. I needed to move up from my teardrop as my 8 year and wife will be traveling with me on some of my kayaking trips. I just put the money down for a 1992 Hi-Lo Funlight 195fl. I do not know anything about this model specifically. I have kicked tires at various dealers in all kind of travel trailers and pop-ups but when I saw this Hi-Lo on the internet in my price range I jumped on it. I know all of the advantages of towing and easy set up/tear down but I don't know much else. I have not been able to find a brochure on this model or anything listing the specs. Can anyone direct me as to where to go? Of course after I purchased the unit I found out about the company closing. That really won't effect me as I did not purchase an 18 year old unit expecting much factory support. Yet it would have been nice to know that the company would be there. So can anyone tell me what I have gotten myself into? Here are some off the top of my head questions.

What is the floor made out of and was it coated with anything at the factory to protect it?

What are the walls and framing made out of?

How do I perform basic maintence on the unit, oiling the cables?

What is the roof made out of on this years unit?

Where can I go for parts (particularly the rubber gasket between the top and bottom)? Is this something I can replace myself?

Any suggestions on the workability or any other issue with this unit would be appreciated.

Start by reading the posts here about years close to yours. The floor is flake board with a tar coating on the bottom. they held up pretty well, but a lot of towing in heavy rain will cause the outer edge to soften and the weight of the walls will cause the outer frame supports to sink some into the floor, this tilts the lower walls outward at the top causing guide block problems. As far as I know the framing and walls on your model are wood, the HI-LO models or classic had metal framing. What is the condition of the trailer? poor, fair, good, or excellent? If the condition is good or excellent just seal all seams especially the roof. Yes, oil the cables, use chain and cable lube. I am sure others will have advice also.

I recently bought a 1993 classic and this is my first trailer. I went over the whole thing with a fine tooth comb. check the guide bar underneath, make sure it's clean and greased, I had some worn suspension links that I replaced as well. These guys did alot of the factory work JR REPAIR I delt with Rob buying some glide blocks and the suspension links, he's a very helpful guy so don't worry about the factory not being around. And there are alot of good people on this site that can help you with just about anything you need to know about them. Enjoy that camper, I love mine...;-)
