We just bought a 1972 Hi Lo - 2 axels and it is in great shape inside and out. Looks like the cables are new. How do we lubricate them? Should we lubricate the guides and with what? Also, is there a manual way to raise the trailer, if the motor goes out or cables break? Thanks. Can't wait for the maiden voyage.

It appears that you are starting out on the right foot with a HiLo that is in good shape. For the cables, wipe them clean with a rag and then apply a lubricant that does not attract a lot of dirt. There is a gun lube that you can get at Walmart that meets that requirement, I can't think of its name, maybe someone will post that here. **You must always clean and lube the guide rod that parallels the hydraulic cylinder.** The guide rails can be lubed with clear silicon spray, or you can rub on some paraffin.

I didn't answer your question about the lift. The motors rarely fail on the HiLo, it's more of a case of a bad battery or poor wire connections. Some models had a manual backup pump but I don't know about yours. If yours has it you will see the pump that looks like the pump on a bottle jack located in front of the main pump. If a cable breaks you will have to enlist a couple of your friends or get a farm jack to help the broken corner up then prop it with a 2x4. There is a thread here that goes through the cable replacement and adjustment.

Buy this at Walmart in the sporting(gun) dept. It is called break free and costs about $6.00 a can. May have the price wrong. Worth what ever the cost.

Welcome and congrats on your "new" trailer! You'll also want to lubricate the exposed portions of the lift ram underneath the trailer. White lithium grease works well for this.
