Cable greasing procedure
 

I've owned my 17" Hi-Lo for several years now and I read about lithium grease that should be applied to the cables. Does anybody have a good procedure for this?

Is that the standard? Is there a manufacturer recommendation? Just curious, thanks!

Dana, my HiLo manual says to use WD-40.

I use WD 40 on ours on the pop up tent trailer i used a liquid to lithium grease applied like WD 40 but have got away from it.

Thank you for your responses, obviously I was mixed up, it's the cable supply hydraulic cylinder that needs the lithium grease. I will use the WD-40 on the cables. The video I watched recommended grease every six months on the hydraulic cylinder...not sure if that depends on how often you use it. Thanks

Dana - I think you might be talking about the "guide rod" under the trailer? If you look under there you'll see a silver, shiny (hopefully) rod that the part that the cables attach to moves on. It should be cleaned off regularly with a rag and then some kind of grease applied to keep it smooth and shiny. I've used wheel bearing grease as well as lithium grease in the past. I don't think the type is too critical, as long as it prevents corrosion.

You might want to look into spray lubricants specifically intended for cable and wire rope - WD 40 works, but it's pretty light weight and probably doesn't protect the cables as well. Lots of vendors and manufactures have cable-specific spray lube - just Google "wire rope lubricant" and you'll get lots of options.

I used garage door cable lubricant on our Hi-Lo. It's in a spray can from Walmart and it goes on and evaporates to paraffin-like film. It doesn't collect dirt as grease does. It's similar to bicycle chain lube.
