Cable swag tool
 

Hi again I'm going to replace me cables in the next two weeks does anyone know of some where we're I could rent this tool I don't want to drop any money on a tool I'm only going to use for this project I'm in the dallas tx area or if anyone on the forum that lives by Dallas has one I can use I would gladly kick down a rental fee to you any help would be good thanks.

If you don't get any response refer to the doccument I sent you Page 1. Towards the bottom of the page under tools#2 I wonder if Harbor Freight would have one. I know you said you don;t want to own a tool that you will only use once. Perhaps you could resell it if you end up purchasing it. Maybe you will get lucky and find one on ebay or another site.

Have fun putting in the cables!! We haven't had to do this knock on wood. Our friend in the camping club did this and he said he invented some new words!! Takes eight hours to do the job. If I remember correctly it would cost $1000.00 to have it done at the dealer. Glad to hear you found the tool at a reasonable price.

Tornado in Dalas area of Texas
 

Watched the world news tonight and saw parts of Texas torn apart by the Tornado. It heaved tractor trailer ect. like the Wizard of OZ. I hope all our Texas HiLo friends are safe.

Ya luckily it don't look like anyone died so that is good the tornado that hit Lancaster is the town next to mine I was hoping I didn't get any high winds at my house I have the top supported by 4x4s but it missed us so everything looks good I work for the city of cedar hill and we were out helping with the cleanup till last night they got quite a bit of damage but luckily it don't look like any one was hurt to bad

Thanks for letting us know you and your HiLo are okay. Glad to hear no one was killed or seriously hurt. What a clean up job!! Feel for those that have lost homes and everything they have.

Home Depot(mine does anyway) sells stainless steel eyes that are designed to be installed in the cable ends. They have a nut that fits over the outside of the cable, tightens with an ordinaary end wrench, and compesses it into a cone inside the eye fitting, just like a plumbing compression fitting. I used them on my 17' Funmaker when I resrtung mine in 2009, and I haven't had a problem with them since. Cheap, Quality Fix. I spent less than $100, spent about 3 hours on my back by the time I got the cables adjusted just right, and saved several hundred bucks!!
Just be sure to buy High Stength or Aircraft cable. It has smaller but many more wires in it so it has a lot higher breaking strength-you'll need it-the cables have a LOT of tension on them. I'm not sure but it may be made from higher tension steel also. Get the strongest cable you can find in the same diameter as your originals. Also, be sure to get eyes the same size as possible to the bolt that ties the cable to the frame. Don't buy oversize eyes thinking they are stronger, well they are stronger, but if the hole has excessive play the result will be excessive wear in the eye and the bolt too, neccesitating early replacement of both.
