Default Can I walk on top of my Hi/Lo

I want to clean up my camper top and check for areas that need to be calked. Is it OK to walk on the top? Should the top be down or up or does it matter?

Thanks

lancruza,

Seeing as the roof rafters are 4 foot apart, would you really want to walk on the roof Clean and check by lowering the top and using a ladder, or if you are determined to walk on the roof use a plank and span across the rafters.

I've always been hesitant to walk on top of an RV, unless the manufacturer has specifically stated that it is designed to carry the load. Years ago an RV shop damaged a mini-motorhome that I used to own by walking on the roof.

I would avoid walking on it as much as possible, and would do what Gary suggested if you really need to do it. Make sure the roof is lowered.

I personally use a 4x4 plywood sheet if working in a general area. Use plank to get there if neccessary. This reduces your lb/sqft imprint on aluminum roofing.
I always have trlr in down position to work anywhere on the roof. A strong suggestion!

Default walking on roof

When DH is on our rubber roof I always steady the ladder as he gets on and off the roof. I stay by to hand him tools or the hose. Just a safety precaution.

lancruza,

I agree with what the others say about walking on the roof; do so only if necessary. Two years ago I had our HiLo detailed and the guy [who was not big at all] did a super job cleaning the roof, but, he walked all over it and used a mop and soap & water from a bucket, and tap water from a hose to rinse it off. In so doing, he also cleaned off years of crud that had built up. A month later, we took our HiLo on a trip to Oklahoma and were in a heavy snow storm. When we got back home, and prepared to winterize it, I discovered that we had a leak in the storage bins above the tilt-out.

There are several posts on the forum that detailed what I and others have done to repair the roof. When you do get your roof clean, I would strongly advise that you look it over very carefully and see if you notice small spots of metal rot [electrolysis caused by two dissimilar metals touching]. IF you do see them, then you should search "roof repair" on this forum to determine what you must do.

Good luck.
