How do you classify a Hi-Lo ?

DW and I were kicking around the idea of going to Biltmore later this year. DW called a campground that is close by to it and asked about costs etc.

They asked her what type of camper we had. She told the person it was a Hi-Lo, but that's not what they were asking. They wanted to know if it was a pop-up, travel trailer, fifth wheel, motorized RV etc. This was because the cost was based on type and length.

DW told her she wasn't sure how to describe it. She told her the top went up and down and the lady she spoke to thought it must be a pop-up. DW told her it wasn't, which made things all the more confusing.

What do you tell people when you're asked this question?

I always call mine a travel trailer. To me "pop-ups" are like the Coleman and Starcraft canvas top units (that's what I started with before getting a Hi-Lo).

How do you classify a Hi Lo?

I always tell them it's a travel trailer. First reason is that it is not sold as a pop up.
Another reason is that many campgrounds do have sites that will accomidate a pop-up (site is short) but not a longer RV. Ours is a 2805C which is longer than my friends 27 foot TT.
Have had one ocassion in a state park that I was told it was a pop-up but that was by a temp worker at the park.................so I corrected him? Guess that's where my pride got the best of me. ha

My dealer told me that technically they are "telescoping travel trailers". But if anybody wants to know just tell them they are travel trailers to save confusion.

I agree with you Papa, I would have done the same. While I wasn't sure how to classify a Hi-Lo, I strongly feel that it's not in the "Pop-up" category.

Thanks everyone, I feel confident now that "Travel Trailer" is the right answer to give the next time someone asks.

I just looked at my title and Texas registration and they both say "travel trailer".

A Rocky Mountain "HI" to all Hi Lo members, I am a new owner of a 2001 22TL. I have only used it once since purchasing it and my wife and I really like it after crawling up into pickup popup campers for the last 2 years. When we went to insure it American National Insurance gave me a choice of either Travel Trailer or Camping Trailer. The price of insurance was cheaper on the camping trailer (Not much) so now we a camping trailor to travel in. ;)

Jay, Hopefully that won't come back to bite you someday. Technically it is a telescoping travel trailer.

Meriflower 11-04-2010 08:23 PM

RichR is correct, they are technically a telescoping travel trailer or travel trailer for short.

Who is the most reasonable insurance Company for a HiLo?

RichR 11-05-2010 07:41 AM

I got Progressive for our 2310H for $246/yr. Full replacement cost coverage.

HiLo is a travel trailer - end of discussion! It is even referred to in the HiLo literature as a travel trailer.
