New Hi-Lo Owner

Hey everyone, let me say first of all that this forum has been so helpful over the last 3 weeks.

In 1996 my grandpa bought a 1970 Hi-Lo. He parked it in his barn until the next year when he planned to go camping, but died before he was able to do that. So some of our family decided they would use it to go camping, and they took it home raised it up and cleaned it, but they could never get it to lower. So they took it back and parked it in the barn. And there it sat for 14 years.

3 weeks ago, my brother and I decided to try and find a camper that we could buy and use for our families. Immediately my mind went back to that camper. I called my grandma and asked her if she wanted to sell it. She said yes and that she had been asking $600 but no one would bite, and she would sell it to us for $400. We jumped on it.

I have posted some pics but I will put some on this thread so you can see it.

We had to replace the ceiling, only one bad piece, but you know how it is, make it all match. LOL nothing really hard, since I have done construction and remodel work all my life. We had to remove the fresh water tank due to a hole in the bottom of it, but we will replace it with a new one sometime soon. other than that everything else worked still. except the fridge is gone. no worries there. I laid new carpet and my sister-in-law did the new upholstery, my wife painted a little on the inside, and my brother installed new LED lights on the outside. I installed new under cabinet lights with flourecent lights, and will be installing surround sound tomrrow. Plumbing was going to be a real bear, or so I thought. I had to buy a new water inlet for the city water hook up and a new valve for the toilet (which was the priciest thing on the entire remodel. Other than that, no other leaks or problems with the plumbing, and no issues with the propane.

All in all, it's very nice. we bought it for $400 and have about $500 in it.

By the way, this forum is to thank for us finally getting it lowered. Someone emailed me the link to the manual and it explained a lot. We went out put a new battery in, raised it up off of the "Safety Latch" and released it, and it lowered down like a charm. Been in the up position for 14 years and no one could figure out how to get it down.

Anyways, I know it's a long post, but thanks to all of your comments, and would like any feedback as to any of the pics or questions about the remodel.

Welcome Aboard!! That sure is a great old Hi-Lo, it was probably built to last. There is allot of experience with Hi-Lo trailers here on the forum so keep checking in to see what is going on. There is always something to learn, and if you have any ideas throw them in.

thanks for the feedback. Got everything pretty much finished up today. Had to remove the old awning cover, (it was pretty bad) and going to use a pretty nice tarp I found today until I can get a new awning made. I've also found out that if the people who made these, had to tear them down and put them back together, they would find new ways of foing things to make it easier to do repairs. But, oh well, all is done and now looking forward to camping in it next weekend.

by the way that is a shower curtain that we used to cover the couch. Got it at walmart for like $20 and it's working great.
