New-to-me 1990 229L
 

So I have been thinking about/planning moving to Alaska spring of 2013... I was just planning on renewing my lease and ending it around the time I was leaving. Then I thought "heeeeyyyyy...." I was going to buy an RV to move/live in for a time when I got up there, but now I'm going to live in this when my lease ends before moving... decreasing my expenses by about $400 a month...

So I started "looking" for one, just to get an idea what I could get... you know, window shop a bit.

So I spotted the ad for the Hi-Lo and contacted the owner and set up a time to check it out. I like the Hi-Lo's because of the "ease of transport"

I have to put new tires on it, the trailer has been on them for the past 10+ years in a airplane hanger... YEAH it's been sitting under cover ALL IT'S LIFE when not in use. Refrig had been replaced and the A/C unit a few years back. Yeah it has a couple of issues to be dealt with, but hey, it's 22 years old.

Has all the manuals, tools and hoses to make it work. Goes up and down really well, needs a battery as all it has in it is a car battery right now.

I plan on Liquid roof (EPDM) the roof ASAP, even though it looks like new. But hey, do it BEFORE you have an issue, not after.

$3500, but I need an awning...

I have a 1990 25ft. Classic. Your pictures look dead ringer for my HiLo. How long is your HiLo Measure from front of tongue to back bumper.? Have you actualy purchased this.? If you can't afford an awning right away you could always use a cheaper easy up shelter. Be sure to carefully inspect all exterior caulk and renew as this is your first defense against water intrusion. It is a good idea to coat your roof. Welcome to the forum.

Hey "Sam", yeah I have purchased it. I have yet to move it :( The guy I bought it from works for a friend of mine, but I don't plan on leaving it there past this week. Tires have been a bit of a nag, 14's seems like everyone had 1 or 2 but not 4. Sears had some off the wall brand and I didn't want to take the chance. A guy that does tires for the dealership my friends family owns is going to put the new tires on wednesday "on-site". Moving it would not have gone well, tires were VERY bad and had "chunks" missing from sitting so long.

I am not sure how long it is, but it's a 229L model, so if yours is the same model...

I can't wait for it to be closer (right now it's 50 miles away) so I can start working on it... Doesn't needs much work, but we all know how that goes...

A 229L is a 1990 22 foot Hi-Lo trailer with the Lounge (couch) in front.

I have a 1990 25ft. Classic hilo. If you want to see what it looks like you can go under off topic and click on 1990 HiLo classic restoration. Maybe some of the maintenance items mentioned you will need to do. I remember going over every inch of ours when we got it. Fun picking flies out of window tracks.

Well, after a couple of logistical delays, it's home!!!

Drove it from his house to the interstate... about 10 miles... filled up the tow vehicle, a 20xx year Suburban with a 5.3L Vortec, and checked the hubs for heat, stuff dragging, hanging what-not... all was well. Hubs were barely even warm to the touch.

Got up on the big road heading north to San Antone, pulled very nice, very docile, no swaying, bucking or misbahaving of any sorts.

Stopped at the rest area about 8 miles down the highway and checked for any issues that may come up, checked the hubs again, still barely warm to the touch.

Headed up the highway and rolled on the other 50 miles to the final resting spot (for now) and parked it.

I must say it's one of the easiest pulling trailers I have ever pulled. Not even the 18 wheelers rushing by at 80 (I kept it at 65 tops, just to be sure) bothered that trailer in the least.

BTW 4 Hercules (Made by Cooper) 6ply radial trailer tires, installed for $395 on site, didn't even have to drag it to the tire shop....

Glad to hear you got your HiLo home with no trouble. I know the feeling. Our HiLo was down at my Mom's for seven months. We were finaly able to bring it home and put he tire covers on and do a little more caulking. Forgot to get some more while I was out today. Tows like a dream. Now the fun begins. Repairs and preventive maintenance.

Thanks for posting a picture. My 90 Classic has the exact fabric and curtains. If you should need any little hardwear I have the matching buttons and quite an assortment of hardwear/parts. Your unit looks in tip top shape. I put a rug runner down the center aisle and quite a few throw rugs when you come in the door and in the br. This way mud and rocks don,t get in the trailer. Feels good to bare feet in the middle of the night with trips to the br. Would love to see more interior pictures.

Thanks for the replies, yeah sam it is in really great shape, just in need of a very deep cleaning... It was not used very much over the past 12 years as a camper but more like a "guest house" when family came and stayed... More pictures are coming, as I get it cleaned up and out (yeah - it came with EVERYTHING that was in it... towels, shoes, soap (yuck) toothpaste and toothbrushes...)

At least they kept it VERY well maintained and replaced stuff that broke or stopped working... except the tires.

jcurtis95 - I live in San Antone but do get up to Fredricksburg every now and again. Very nice place, but can be a bit "touristy" during the high season...

two one zero 577 seven four nine three if you ever get down this way.

PS - I don't think I need any hardware, it seems pretty complete, but I'll keep you in mind.

Hardwear
 

I was thinking that since HiLo went out of business you wouldn,t be able to get the covered buttons. You will break some of the hardwear with use. It all can be obtained from most rv places or on the net. Our HiLo dealer will ship parts anywhere. Heck they even wrapped a new HiLo in protective wrap and shipped it across the ocean!!

We bought this tent camper from a guy that was 90 yeard old. He was the second owner and kept it in a barn. It just needed $150.00 worth of canvas repair and new tires. He was having chest pains showing us how to set it up. No problem as I am a Nurse(CPR.) Anyway he let us have everything in the trailer and I still use somethings in the HiLo.

Yeah but I'll pass on the toothbrushes... maybe the toothpaste will come in handy... :D

This just came to my rememberance. We put a deposit on our HiLo in the fall and the dealer kept it until the spring. I went out to have the work done on our truck and decided to sit in our HiLo and check it out somemore. I found a boilbag dinner that had been left in the ref. for months. We also found a tube of lipstick and a toothbrush that had fallen down the inside seal/between the upper and lower half.

Things have been going slow as far as the cleanup... currently working nights and a crap load of overtime (and I get to work today, yippie).

Your interior looks brand new and has the exact fabric and curtains as mine. Work can be a grind just remind yourself of those unemployed that would love to have a job.
