I had cut my own 2x8's and 5/4 boards leveling side to side under the axle and the tongue jack to level fore and aft keeping the bulk trailer weight on the axles. Then just support the corners with the jacks, I didn't think that you were supposed to use the jacks to lift the trailer.

Exactly vanooch. You level the trailer first by using levelers or wood under the tires to level side to side. Then adjust the tonge jack to level front to back. Finally, drop the stability jacks to provide support for the corners. The trailer doesn't have to be exactly level but you want it somewhat close.

As Jim said, it's too easy to twist the frame if you try to "level" it significantly using the jacks. This would cause severe problems for the lifting system.
