Question on plates?

I recently bought my plates for my HiLo, but I think they gave me the wrong ones. I live in Texas. Can any Texans tell me what it says on your plates in red lettering? Is it (Travel trailer) or (trailer) that is on your plates? Any help is much appreciated.

? on Plates

ogbozo,

I live in Fredericksburg, TX and my plates have "Travel Trailer". If yours says 'Trailer' they probably gave you a farm tag. Better take your checkbook back with you to the county tag agent or just stay with it until you are questioned on it. Looks like the goof-up would be on your county tag agent's part and I doubt if you would be subjected to any penalty because of the state's error.

In Virginia, trailer plates aren't distinguished between travel trail and just trailer. If you have a trailer whether for carrying cargo, horses, or travel trailer, they are the same.

The only difference in trailer plates is either regular ones, or permanent ones. Regular ones are renewed every 1 or 2 years. Permanent ones are permanent. The cost of a permanent plate is roughly 3 times the 1 year rate. So, any year beyond the 3rd year is free.

Permanent trailer plates are $100. if you keep the trailer for 15 years, that's all you ever pay.

By the way, even permanent trailer plates can be personalized in Virginia. In Virginia a person has a huge range of choices of plates, all of which can be personalized ( for an extra fee of course). There are 98 different specialized plates, plus 44 different military related plates, plus 92 different college plates, plus twenty or thirty plates that fall in the Other category. The Other category includes the generic VA plate, plus ones with a Cardinal on them or mountians, and the trailer plates, etc.

Mine says "Travel Trailer" also... I would not trust just because someone gave you the wrong tags that you won't get in trouble for it. Go back or call the tag office and ask them to be sure and safe... If you plan on traveling out of state this could lead to a much bigger hastle then you really want to deal with and it will take less time to fix now...

I agree with Davidc. Better safe than sorry.

In South Carolina, we are provided with a plate labeled "Camper." When we had our tent camper before our current Hi-Lo, the plate was also labeled "Camper." I assume in South Carolina all RV towables are labeled Camper. However, a fifth wheel is a towable, and I'm not sure how its plated. We have to pay yearly personal property taxes on our Hi-Lo in addition to a small fee for updating plate registration.

Trailer plates

Interesting how different states do the trailer plates. Maybe someday it will all be the same.

I'd rather them not. If they did, it'd mean the Federal government had stuck it's nose into another area where it has no business.

You are absolutely right. I was not thinking. It would probably be okay within your own state but not when you went elsewhere. If the tag agent made a mistake, she/he should correct it [at your expense].

Visited my DMV to pay for HiLo registration

My registration comes due in Dec. I pay it in March and go in person to pay the prorated fee. The clerk didn't know why the inspection sticker was fully punched for March and was also punched beside Dec. Dh said it is to prevent you from using the insp. sticker for your car. Works in DMV and can't answer a question. I have to go there again and I will tell her why the inspection sticker is punched in two places.

Mine say Travel Trailer here in West Texas, AKA Almost Juarez, Mexico. :)
