Receiver hitch on rear of trailer
 

Anybody ever put a receiver on the rear of their hi lo? I would like to carry a hitch basket on the rear for a generator or occasional dead critter. I just don't know if the bumper or frame will carry the weight. Any thoughts experiences or ideas would be helpful.

When we purchased our Hi-Lo in 2007, we had a 2" receiver installed-it was welded to the both the bumper and the frame. We use it for carrying our 2 bikes with a Yakima bike rack. It works great but I won't put any more weight than the 2 bikes with the rack back there.

I am sure your 97 has the same box frame that my 95 has, I have nothing on the bumper but the spare tire, we put a lot of miles on the trailer and the frame developed a crack on the door side at the rear spring hanger, had to have it welded. I would say don't add weight to the bumper or you are inviting trouble.

thanks for the input. The frame and bumper don't seem to be made to carry much weight. When we tow with the hummer there isn't much room for extra luxuries.

My thought is that if a HiLo was designed to have a receiver it would be either standard equipment or an option. You are also altering tongue weight by adding something to the rear and adding undo stresses to the frame.

IMO, you're probably better using a ballmount that lets you put the bike carrier and the trailer ball on the hitch of the tow vehicle, and simply put the bikes between the tow vehicle and the trailer (if you have enough room)

Sorry, that doesn't work with a WD hitch.

Yes it will, you just have to use the right one if you use a WD hitch

I have never seen that type, there is something for everything. My concern would be how much the tow weight and tongue weight is reduced when adding one of those. Are there any specifications on that? Extending the hitch out from the TV has to have a negative effect.

I have no personal experience with them, I've only seen them on google.

If I was using/purchasing one, I'd want to make sure it's from a reputible company, that has done testing/etc.. before I trusted it.

Morh, you would think that they would of had to had all the safety inspections and testing done prior to a patent on it.

Years ago I was looking into putting a receiver on the back of my 31 foot HiLo. The people I was talking to about it said to call the factory to check with them. I did and they said absolutely not too. Any extra weight on the rear will cause the front to rise thus making it unsafe to tow. It is not designed to have anything with weight on the rear.

i have had 2 spare tires and a large removable rack on my 2207T bumper for 4 yrs now,take it places that are quite rough,had no problems yet,i carry up to 150 lbs on the rackwithout issue.
