trouble getting the top down

my father has a towlite hi lo he says that the top went up perfectly but when he tried to get it to come back down after pulling the release cable and hitting the down button nothing happened he hit the up buttton again and the motor hummed but when he pushed the down nothing he also thought that the release cable didn't pull out as far as it used to

Hi Slee. It sounds like the top is resting on the support and isn't lifting off it enough to allow the cable to release. Have your Father check the hydraulic fluid in the pump resevoir and maybe add some if he thinks it is low. It went up high enough to engage the support so it has to be able to raise off it enough to disengage.

The cable not pulling out as much as normal means the support isn't releasing.

Try pushing the up button to make sure the top is up with weight off the safety catch. Then pull the cable and then push the down button. Oops, looks like you already did that. Also, there may be a chance that the solenoid that releases the fluid back to the reservoir is not working.

Any other ideas?

thanks i will let my dad know what to try i'm not sure if he still has the manual for it do you know where the hydro res. is at

The hydraulic pump and reservoir are combined into a single unit and it is located up front behind the LP tanks in the battery compartment.
