vintage Hi Los
 

I have read that sometime in the 60s Hi Lo manufactured their trailers with the door on the back rather than on the curbside. Does anyone know what year this was and was that design feature on all their models at that time?

I believe it started in 1964. We are looking at one to purchase :)

I have scans of sale pamphlets that are from (roughly) 1960 to 1963 and the rear doors were not in any of them.

From pics I have seen the early Hi Lo trailers had lift 2 lift cables in the front of the trailer and 2 in the back. When the door moved from the curbside to the back did the placement of the lift cables remain the same, or did they move to 2 on the streetside and 2 on the curbside?

That's a really great question. Our 1963 has the pully/lift on the ends. When we go to see the one we are thinking of buying, I will let you know. The pictures of the 2 above don't show the pully.

In one of the pictures with a side view, you can see the guide rails. So I'd think the cables would be on the side also.

If you look at the inside, there are no pulleys on the window and door ends though.

I am curious about the cable location because my 64 homemade Hi Lo has the cables and the guide rails on the streetside and curbside, with my door curbside. I have noticed vintage Hi Lo trailers with the cables on the front and back instead and wondered if the size of the trailer dictated the cable placement or if maybe the change occurred when the door location changed. Where are the cables on newer Hi Lo trailers and has it changed throughout the years?

The cables are all on the sides on all models for as many years back that I have seen which gets back into the 1970's.

there are some hi-lo's with guides on the side ( curb side and road side ) and still lift from the front and back. I think the guides are for stability

The guides are to keep the top and bottom evenly spaced and in position in respect to each other, especially when the top is up. Otherwise the top would be swinging back and forth hanging from the cables.

Kind of late to respond, but i have a Hi-Lo with the door in the back.
