Alabama has hills like that?

No kidding, the Alabama pics look more like Arizona to me. But then my experience in Alabama is limited ...

Lol Alabama hills, right next to lone pine and Mt Whitney in background. Over 400 movies have been filmed here. Alabama hills is in California

Reminds me of the Florida River, somehow (which is in southwestern Colorado near Durango). We've camped there twice. Names can be somewhat misleading, can't they?

To each his own. My wife and I started tent camping in 1986 and moved up to a small Estrelle Trailer in 1996 and to a Hi-Lo about 2009. In all those years we never had a gun with us except on our first trip to Canada and Alaska. On that trip we legally took a 30.06 rifle and only because of our concerns about wild life. That rifle stayed on the floor of the truck the entire six weeks we were gone. Now at 79, I wouldn't trust myself with a gun.

We have camped numerous times in Kernville, but always at Headquarters Campground in the park system. Good fishing along the campground if you don't mind wadding the river Just have to be very careful when wadding. We had our granddaughters with us one year, fishing from the campground, when a park ranger pulled me aside and said I should probably take the girls back to our campsite as they were expecting a body to float down the river at any time, which it eventually did. Two lost souls to the Kern River on that trip.:(

To each there own.....in the 70's while camping with family in nor cal. The hells angels rode into the camp ground and killed 2 people, we were 100ft away. My dad let me know then, while camping your responsible for your family and there's nobody around to help you, always be prepared. Myself and wife boondock, usual out in middle of nowhere. I'm responsible for her safety. I'm trained in firearm safety and the gun is legal and transported to camping site legally.

I have never had that type of experience, but when tent camping in an empty campground in Oregon, I had gone fishing and my wife was by herself. A group of riders came into the campground, which did scare the heck out of my wife. She had grabbed an ice pick and retreated to the tent. Fortunately nothing happened but it did give her a big scare. I didn't mean to make you think I was critical of your gun.

In 1984 my son and ex father-in law dry camped (two tents)for 2 weeks on the Tikchik River in southwestern Alaska. What a great trip with all the salmon caught and released the first part of the trip and then kept for the return home. We did have a double barrel shotgun with one shell to scatter the brush and a slug for bears. Did not have any encounters with the bears on that trip. Spent a heck of a lot of time boiling water for consumption and cooking.
