You are a brave soul. Be careful out there!

Paul,

I remember it well (born and raised in North Dakota), add a 10mph wind and the wind chill factor puts it at a -30F even with the sun shinning ... that is why I live in California!:D

Brrrrr!

I live in Florida, the only state that has NO SNOW as of today! It is going to freeze here in Central Florida tonight!
Has anybody seen AL GORE??? Maybe he stuck his tongue to a flag pole somewhere? I hope.

We're Winter Texas at Rockport and yesterday was the coldest day of the year. The day temperatures never got above 46 degrees. Haven't had a frost here yet but it dipped into the 30's at night. However, we had a rain, hail, wind, trailer shaker last week when the front went thru at 4:30AM. The weather channel advised of a tornado in our area so we were happy to just have a trailer shaker.

Any of you hearty cold weather campers have anything you do to keep your Hi-Lo functional in cold weather ... that is in below freezing weather? Tank heaters, added insulation, Canadian Club, etc ... how do you survive the cold?

John, we drag our Hi-Lo's south to where its warm! Seriously, I remember that your thread about camping in Yosemite in November brought out a very lively (and good) discussion about many aspects of sub-zero camping. I believe you did it as well as it can be done... especially since that was a dry camp! Who would have thought that ice falling from trees would be so damaging! Because of your adventure we are actually thinking about going to Yosemite next February (but would stay in one of the cabins).

I will say that when I lived in my Hi-Lo during my college days in the Idaho panhandle, I did wrap heat tape on the plumbing, inside and out (after repairing a cracked CPVC pipe behind the reefer). Later I wrapped more tape around the 4" sewer hose after a freeze. Oh, I also built a temporary tar board skirt around the bottom of the trailer, and used 2 by 4's to take the snow weight off the cables. But these precautions were possible because I was living long-term in the same location; none would be practical for winter travel camping.

We have friends that own an Artic Fox 5th wheel... and I have to admit that the thing is comfortable and WELL designed for winter camping... much better than a Hi-Lo. Having said that, the trade off is having to haul a 30 plus foot long, 10,000 lb., 13 foot tall behemoth (through snow), at 8 mpg. I shudder just imagining that endeavor!
