hydraulic lift system

I'am new to this site & hi-low trailers any help would be much appreciated. After letting my 1986 hi-low sit this winter went to raise it & the motor just made a noise. so i checked the fluid level & add some transmission fluid. After several times of adding fluid would try to lift & would start. but when it started to raise up a little stoppped & i let go of switch then when it came back down fluid starting coming out of cap. I'am guessing that now i have to much fluid. If any one has any ideas that would be great help.

Maurice, you didn't mention whether you had a fully charged battery. The battery must be in place and charged, or the top won't lift. Also, check the age of your marine deep cycle battery, it may be too old.

I have installed new marine battery. Now my hi-low goes up, thanks to info on the HTF. My next question is now when it gets half way up it seems to slow down the rest of the way up. Is my fluid level not correct. Thanks to all of you who post solutions.

The fluid needs to be within 1 inch of the top of the reservoir with the top of the trailer DOWN. It may be hard to check the fluid level in this configuration. I use a bent over straw as a dipstick to check mine.
