1978 2278t need a spare wheel???
 

Hello everyone, i have a 78 tandem axle that has no spare wheel / tire. i work at a junkyard and have tons and tons of wheels laying around. Anyone know what vehicle would work for a donor wheel? i need to be 14inch, im thinking from my measurements the bolt pattern is 5x4.5 which would be common on a ford ranger, mustang, wrangler but im not sure of the center hole, id assume these are hubcentric and need to have a tight fitting wheel to the hub? Thanks!!!!!

I think there was a lot of different axels used around that time. I am sure that I picked up a spare at tractor supply. I could be wrong but I could not find brakes for my Canada made aurora axel and plan a axel swap to dexter.. So do the research before dropping the cash. I don't run a spare I carry cash for a flatbed, its so low I would not want to change a tire on the side of the road.

I can't help you with your size, but I found new, wider wheels online for less than $30 each, as I recall. Trailer wheels, steel ones, are not terribly expensive.

Not sure about your specific trailer, but on our '07 23' Classic, the clearance is very tight between the tire and lower skirting around the wheel opening, and pretty close on the backside between the tire and and the wheel well / frame rail. If you have similar tight clearances, it's going to make rim width and offset critical on a spare wheel.

If you have access to a tire machine at the yard, you may want to take one wheel off the trailer, dismount the tire and get accurate rim dimension measurements to insure that you wind up with a wheel that fits properly.
