I have a Hi Lo 1982 2182. The brake shoes need replacing and I need to replace one brake assembly. These brake drums have a 7 1/4 inch ID and the shoe width is 1 1/2 inches. All I have been able to find are 7 x 1 1/4; they do not work - won't fit!!

Does anyone have a suggestion as to where I may find the proper replacement? Alternatively, should I try to convert to the 7 x 1 1/4 or perhaps a 10 inch drum?

Do you know who made the axle as Hi-Lo used a couple of different brands over the years. Converting to a 10 inch would be ok but everything would have to be changed, would be a big expense. My 95 21 ft has KLO 10 inch brakes. The 2209 has Dexter 10 inch brakes.

It might be better to get new lining on your shoes, there are places that do this, do a Google search for your area.

Any idea on where I can find the maker of the axle? I have not gotten under the trailer to look for a stamp yet, but where I did look, I did not see anything. Dexter says on newer models that it is stamped on the right side, but mine is older. I also see no name on any of the brake parts.

I cannot get the brake shoes relined because the right rear brake was damaged and the shoes are somewhat bent as well as the adjustment screw is broken, so I need a complete assembly . (I did have my 1950 Plymouth shoes relined and was hoping I could do that with these.) I'm probably lucky I didn't have a problem with the right rear wheel on my last trip.

I contacted J&R with my axle and hub info. I have a Fayette axle which no longer are made. He stated that they had a similar problem in the past and could find no replacement parts for the Fayette. I also found some posts from a few years ago where some people with Hi Lo's from around '79 to '82 had the same problem I'm having. Unfortunately, no solution was posted. I've got some thinking to do. Sounds like $$$ to me.

The closest I could find was 7 X 1 /14.

Do a search for junkyards with hilo parts. You could also look at websites selling hilos. Seems to me iremember reading of a hi lo for sale 70s model.

I replaced the 2000 lb axles with 3500 lb axles with 10" electric brakes. I just finished today. I took it on a test drive and everything seemed to be working just fine. This solution cost about $550, but a friend and I did the labor. It's not all that hard to replace the axles.
