Broken 1 1/2 wye under tub

Getting ready for our first camping trip this year and went to sanitize the water system, filled the kitchen sink with water and then drained it, went into the bathroom and there was water all over the floor. First I thought I had a leak in the fresh water supply. Then when I filled the bathroom sink and let it drain had water all over the floor again. This time I saw the water coming out from under the tub :( Removed the tub and found the Y had broken at both ends. Just like it had been twisted off. Can't figure out how it happened as when I pulled the trap out it was full of antifreeze. Some new fittings and about a day and it's back together.

Wow

Good thing this happened while you were still home. Have a great funfilled camping trip. We are headed out this week. Going to be a little bit cool with partial rain. Not a total wash out. Good campfire weather.

Gary, that's a nice looking repair! Is there any reason you used PVC instead of ABS in the repair? Not being critical, just wondering. (Maybe you couldn't find the right fittings in ABS?)

Jack, you know how it is when you live in a small town :) Two hardware stores and they both only carry PVC. Do you have any thoughts on why the fitting would have snapped on both ends? If it happens again I'm going with a rubber Femco y fitting.

*grin* My town has only one hardware store (population 1800). Luckily, 15 miles away is a Home Depot and ACE in Payson.

No, I don't have a clue why the fittings should have snapped. I wonder if the weight of a person stepping into the tub pushed down on the pipe enough to cause the break? Looking at the wye, it appears the stress must have come from the tub drain side.

I think a rubber fitting would be a good idea. Personally, I'd change to that when you get back from your trip as a proactive step.

Thanks. How does the tub attach to the "P" trap? Is the "P" trap a screw on type at both ends? Can it be accessed and removed from below if the metal cover is removed? This would eliminate removing the tub.

Thanks

Yes, i'ts just like a house P trap. I unscrewed the P trap before I took the tub out. Mark the metal cover so you can install it exactly in the same place.

Thanks. I will fix this early this spring.

Thanks again,
