Missing stink pipe toilet vent
 

Just got a 99 Hi-Lo and the toilet vent is missing (see pic). The countertop and ceiling mounts still there. Learned that there was once a telescoping vent. Is such a thing still available? or is there a flex pipe option? Any suggestions and links where to possibly buy would be much appreciated.

The vent pipe is just PVC pipe that is tight at one end and is allowed to slip in a standard PVC connection like under your kitchen sink. Schedule 10 PVC will work well, schedule 40 not needed. Perhaps also some light weight flexible hose attached at each end would also work. Hose would just flex and probably make a U when lowering top.

I wouldn't try the flex hose approach myself. I think the bend would be too much and too difficult to control. Also, the original pipe is likely ABS, not PVC. The fixtures you still have are ABS and you would attach the new parts with ABS glue. The rest of the observations are totally correct. You just need something that will slip in and out as the top is lowered.

Jack and Janet you are correct about the ABS pipe, I am so use to PVC at our country place in South Texas. Yes the flex hose would have to be very flexible. Perhaps a rubber hose flexible like a bicycle inner tube. Just a thought.

Sorry if I sounded like I was "nit-picking" you - I suspected you knew the difference, but there are some that don't. Good thought on something like a bicycle tube, that kind of rubber WOULD work, but I don't know where you're going to find something like that in the proper length and diameter.

I should think replacing with ABS that uses two sizes where one slips inside the other would be a fairly simple fix. I haven't really studied mine to see how it's made though.

Just by chance, did the upper pipe come loose and slide down into the lower section? Just a thought.

Getting parts
 

Try J&R in Mount Vernon Ohio. That way you will have an exact replacement.Could someone post a picture of the entire assembly.? Mine is covered up with fabric that is secured with two sided tape.

The piece was down in the lower section! It does have a bit of a ding in it, possible had fallen out at one time and got clipped. Will have to carefully give it a try when lowering. Nice to know about J&R for parts as well. Thanks!

Good, problem solve and all are happy campers. Seems "big" problems do sometime have simple solutions.

I found when that happened to me that drilling tiny holes through both pipes where they join at the top and running a straightened paperclip through it solved the separation problem.

my 99 came with an elastic cloth plastic lined flex hose. Once while camping I had to use one of wifey’s hair scrunchies to reattach it up top, which was forgotten till the elastic degraded and I found the hose lying while winterizing. So I went along the task of finding a replacement for at least the plastic liner and since I am a DIY idea man , I had many thoughts till one day while helping my sister with her above ground pool I see a piece of used blue drain hose which comes in 2 sizes. The smaller of which she no longer uses ; it stretched over the top side very well , even didn’t need a clamp , but as I was fitting the bottom I found the above mentioned pipe that had slid into the cabinet pipe. While I feel both would do the job , I like the flex b/c my hard pipe is a bit skewed. ; kirby

Great idea to use a section of pool vacuum hose. Will give that a try.

I never knew the offical name for this stink pipe thing, and it is appropriate. :eek:

HILO used an ABS "Female Trap Adapter" to make the assembly, but each part is also available separately. The "Female Trap Adapter" consists of three parts:
A "slip joint nut". This is the female threaded ring.
A plastic sealing ring (aka sealing washer) - Flat part faces the slip joint nut
A male thread adapter. This is at the ceiling

The slip joint nut and seal go over the unflanged end of the slip joint pipe (aka slip joint tailpiece) and slide all the way up to the flange. The slip joint pipe is normally a molded one-piece pipe that has a flared rim at one end (aka the flange). Perhaps no one made one the length HILO needed, so instead, HILO used ABS pipe with a flange glued on the end to form the slip pipe. You have to look closely to see the glue. This is the section that falls down when the female slip joint nut is loosened. Without the solvent welded flange in place, the upper inner pipe would drop down all the way into the lower outer pipe.

I noticed that Lowes sells a 12" tailpiece/flex combo. My HILO also seems to rearward side force on the pipe, so I think I'll try it.

exbert I was telling I used the blue drain hose , I feel the vac hose would be too stiff and kink when lowered completely

Once again, Thank you all. The top flange broke off. The pipe was still there. 2 cents worth of electrical tape and it's better than new.
