Cabinet Repair
 

I have a question for you. The refrigerator cabinet is broken across the top front where the fridge box mounts. The only way I can see to fix this is to remove the refrigerator. I am pretty good mechanically but after looking at the back of this thing, I'm not to sure anymore. Has anyone done this before? If so can you give me a step by step on this, because the last thing I want to do is mess something up. I can do the woodwork repairs, I just need a place to start without it being terminal to the fridge.

The other way to get to this, is work from the top down. Remove drawer above the refrigerator(if you have one), remove the 6 screws that hold the countertop on, 3 on each side near the top of the refrigerator cabinet. Mine was not easy to take off because the factory set the countertop and wood mounting brackets in wet expaning foam to seal the vent area of the back of the frig. I went this direction when replacing my frig fan at the back of the unit. Then you can get to the next set of screws or stables to get down to the section of wood that needs to be replaced. What I recall the piece of wood you need to replace is stapled in place, you may have to use a hacksaw blade to cut out the staples to remove to broken piece of wood. You may be able to use a alumium angle to sister the broken piece of wood on the back side for your repair. At this point you can get some oak trim and metal angle brackets at a home improvment center to do the repair. Now on my older 97, if I recall, I would have to remove my whole counter top to get to the broken piece of wood. The counter was held in place underneth with screws and metal angle pieces,access though the lower cabinets.

I guess I'm going to have to dismantle almost the whole cabinet. It is a stand alone cabinet between the flip couch and the eating area. It doesn't have a drawer in it. Sure would be easier if it did. Oh well, I'll get my hacksaw blade, prybar and cross my fingers.

1. Remove all food and beverages from inside the refrigerator. Remove any shelving that may be in your way. Unplug the refrigerator and open the door.

2. Use the power drill to very slowly make a small hole at one end of the crack. Be careful to drill just through the liner and not any further. Then, drill a small hole at the other end of the crack. The holes will prevent the crack from spreading across the plastic.

3. Use a food grade silicone sealant to repair the crack and seal the holes. Read and follow the manufacturer's directions in order to achieve the best results. Repair a small hole in a plastic refrigerator liner by simply sealing it closed in the same manner. You don't need to drill any holes.
