Default Grand Canyon in Winter

Hi all,
We are thinking of taking a trip to Grand Canyon (South Rim, of course) this winter. Since we are sans a RV at this time, we will be staying in a hotel inside or near the park. I'm looking for hotel recommendations from anyone who has stayed in, or just outside the park. When we went last May, we rented a vacation home in Williams (which was awesome) but we want to be closer to the park this time. Thanks ahead of time!

There are cabins on the Rim that are very comfortable (at least in Summer when we stayed in one). There's also El Tovar, and a newer "motel like" place on the Rim. I don't think there's anything else inside the park.

It's been a VERY long time since we've driven up to the South Entrance, so I have no idea if there's anything on the way. As I recall, there's not a lot near the East Entrance either.

Sorry, Greg - our last visits have all been to the North Rim and that's closed now.

- Jack

Thanks for the info, Jack. We ended up reserving one of the motel-like rooms right on the rim for a couple of nights. Never been to GC during the winter so should be fun!

I'm sure this will be my last trip to South Rim. I haven't been to North Rim yet so that will be next. Do you camp there?

We DO camp there, Greg. The campground in the park is right on the rim and is very nice in our opinion. It has NO hookups, though, if that's a consideration for you. They DO have a dump station though, and water is available. There is a "General Store" right next to the campground. You will have to reserve a camping space well in advance (I think reservations may open 6 months ahead of time, but I could be wrong).

There are also dispersed camping places along the road into the North Rim and about 1/2 way down there's a very nice Forest Service campground we've stayed at. Again, no hookups.

The restaurant at the Lodge on the North Rim is quite nice (make reservations for any night you want to eat there), and there's a "fast food" place as I recall.

Have a good time on the South Rim! One day, before I get too feeble, I think a winter visit would be something I'd like to do.

Thanks, Jack! I've printed out your post and will place in my "Grand Canyon" file for future reference!
