Day/night shades
 

What do you do when your shades bunch up in the middle and won't operate? I pulled out the two screws on the bottom thinking it would make them easier to try to get the pleats to line up and now I have no tension. Fustrated.

I have had the same problem with the large shade. I've been told that the shades will sag and lose their shape if not in the full up position when traveling or stored for long periods of time.

I never could get the shade to fold back properly. I eventually replaced it and am now very careful to put it in the full up position unless camping.

Restringing day/nite shades
 

We had the same problem on our recently acquired 2406 T. The large shade over the sink was severely messed up and the one over the tilt out was completely unstrung.

We took the blind over the sink out and I proceeded to wet it down. I placed it out in the sunlight and Carol and I worked the pleats up into a tight "shade up" position while the pleats were wet. I got [3] large "C" Clamps and clamped the shade onto our outside metal rail fence and let it dry for two days. The pleats were mostly reformed to their original state with just two or three that did not reform. It did make the blinds usable and presentable again. We had thought about using spray starch to help keep the pleats in place but haven't done that yet.

For the other blinds, evidently the previous owner released the string from the holding screws and the shade got away from them and just collapsed. I found a place on the web that shows a drawing of how to string the shades and following this procedure, we were able to restring it and make it as good as new.

That's what I call tackling a problem with "force" Nice solution to an agrivating problem.

I must be stupid, but I cannot for the life of me, figure out how to get the shades off the walls of my trailer.

I know how to adjust the tension so they don't "fall down". And, I found the screws that look like they hold the valences? in at the top. But, nothing moves or seems removable at this point.

What am I not seeing?

Go to this website - RV Shade and Blind Repair
On the first page you will find a yellow box on the left side. Click on "Help".
This will give you the info you need for removing the shades. They also have repair parts and "restringing kits" for the pleated shades. Hope this is what you were looking for.

RCREYES, I don't think ironing your blinds would be a solution. I guess at a certain point in time these things wear out and just need replacing. I would recommend roller blinds in your trailer as venetian and vertical blinds would just flap and crash around. I think blackout roller blinds would look nice, be efficient and be handled easily. Replacing blinds
 

I have a 1990 25ft. HiLo Classic. My blinds don't bang around as they have curtains that are fastened to the wall in front of the blinds. When changing window treatments you have to remember the limited clearance because the wall slides down for the travel position. Roller shades may be too bulky to work. What have others replaced blinds or day and night shades with? Looking for cost effective ideas. The estimate for new blinds on sale is $500.00 at HD. I would really like to replace with something other than blinds. My curtains are fine. Just need something to cover the windows with. I have six windows.

Sam, we bought a rebuild kit from the manufacturer of our day/night blinds. It was just fine, but I could have gotten the same thing at HD/hardware store for about 10% of what they charged. I know this won't be a novel idea, but have you at least considered trying a cheap mini-blind to see if it will work?

In both of our Hi-Lo trailers, I've replaced most of the shades with "off the shelf" mini blinds from Big Orange, but Lowes also has them. Both will cut them to width for free. The blinds come with instructions for reducing the length by removing slats. They work just fine.

This is a great topic for discussion at the National Rally at Colo. Springs this June, perhaps with some show and tell examples of what others have done for replacement shades!

Thanks for the replies. DH wants to go with quality steel blinds. Seems I remember a post with pictures of the window treatments that were put in. We'll see how are money situation is. This week I have a biopsy and I may need lots of money for cancer treatment. Prayers appreciated.

day/night shades
 

We are in process of fixing our day night shades. The problem is the track the shades aare stapled to shrink up and warp the pleated fabric. We have restored two 60 inch ones to normal function. If you take them down and pull the tracks out the original track will be all warped. The only thing we could find to fit in the track was a shelf bracket. I washed the fabric on a table outside and after it was dry sewed it onto the metal track. My husband drilled and filed holes so the plastic sleeves would go in correct place. Reassembled, ran cords using instructions I found online. Have pictures if anyone is interested. Blinds are back up, look good and function!

By all means - post pictures!

We have repaired ours, well we are partway done. The problem is the plastic inner track they are stapled to shrinks over time and heat. We have taken ours apart, washed the fabric parts and attached them to new metal pieces. It takes about a day to do each one with about $10 in parts. Have pictures if any one is interested.

Hi Jack, I am out in New River AZ, and I found a lady out in Mesa, that does day/night shade repair. I took my shade in off our 2310 Hi Lo. She works out of her house. I stopped by with the shae and she repaired the blind as I waited. I think she charged me 20.00, and she gave me a full set of the plastic tension buttons. Our large kitchen day/night shade (62"x24") needs to be replaced. The quote from Midget is $115, which is reasonable, but I'd rather spend that money elsewhere. I would be interested in hearing from other members different solutions for replacing a bad shade. Has anyone been able to convert it to blinds or roller shades?
