New Spare Tire Mount

4 Attachment(s)
I never did like the spare tire under the tongue, so I welded up a new mount to put the spare on the rear to reduce the extra heavy tongue weight on my Hi-Lo.

idea

Thanks for the interesting idea. I want to have a spare tire with us when we go camping and was thinking about where to mount the spare. Interesting idea to think about.

that dog

looks like he wants to go camping. Sure hope he has a comfy spot in your HiLo.

Back to the point, why would they put the spare tire on the tongue? Did they need more weight there for some reason?

where

Well some of it is up to the question 1 or 2 axles. With a 1 axle trailer putting the tire on the front or rear impacts the tongue weight real fast. Having it on the front on a single axle adds to the tongue weight. On the rear like that it will decrease the tongue weight.
With a double axle trailer the impact will not be as much.
Remember to check this out as we are shooting for a tongue weight of about 10% total trailer weight. I always used to think 200 pounds but now I'm hearing 10%.
One of the small notes is that garyk52 made a low tire mount. In keeping it low there are less pressures on that back bumper. Of course this brings up the talk about the amount of weight and pressure on the back bumper. Saw several folks post about this on bike racks.
Still all in all I like what you did on the tire mount. Good Job.

A spare tire mount such as this does not present the leverage issue that a bike rack has on a rear bumper. The closer the weight is to the bumper the less torque it puts on the bumper. I'm having a flashback from high school and college physics classes.

Spare Tire location

My 2705T has a bolt for tire underneath the trailer. Only problem I see is it could be very inconvenient( for AAA I hope). Joe Jones
