storage door latches
 

Thinking about replacing the twist latches on my outside storage doors with locks. Has anybody else done this, and if so, what locks did you use.

You can buy latches with locks that are a direct replacement for what's there now.

Those are the kind I used. I think I found them at Home Depot. You have to be careful to get replacements with the same "length" as the ones you are replacing. The easiest way is to take one of the latches off your trailer and take it with you to match with the replacement you are considering.

Another benny when getting them from HD is being able to find the packages with the same key number, thus they are all keyed alike! These numbers were printed right on the package. The problem I found with these "file cabinet" locks is that many keys will open many locks. I have a 10 year old document box that was easily opened with one of the NEW lock set keys I recently bought. But they keep the honest man honest.

Alfred, Go to the site at CH751 RV REPLACEMENT LOCKS, CAM LOCKS, CAMLOCKS for rv locks. These are the ones I bought and installed on my trailer. I call them barrel locks. You usually see this type of lock on vending machines and such. It has a round key. This site has a "pattern sheet" that you lay your original lock assy on to determine the proper length and size of the lock cylinder and the length and shape of the locking "finger". Order as many as you need and they will all be keyed the same, so only one key needed for all. They include multiple sets of the keys with them. I also ordered the spring loaded covers for the lock sets to protect them from the weather. These are quality locks. Hope this helps you.

I bought a five pack at Camping World, all keyed alike. Make sure you take one of the old ones with you as there are various lengths.

Thanks! Yes, getting them all keyed alike and taking a sample would be the way to go! I think my husband said the RV store here sells them in a pack. Will also try the lumber/hardware for possibly a better price.
