Walk-around Bed

I am almost done with my walk-around bed modification on my 2589. It had a jack knife type couch/bed that I never really liked, but my wife wants the functionality of turn it back into the seating couch position as the original!! She did not want a full time bed. Oh boy!! I sure had my work cut out for me!! So after racking my brain on how to accomplish this and finally finishing it, we went camping last month and it was so great not having to climb/jump over her to get out of bed!! I just need to do a little bit of beautifying, lol, to finalize my project. I will post photos soon.

Walk around bed.

I agree the crack in the sleeper couch is not comfortable to sleep on. Can't wait to see your pictures of your walk around bed.

Walk around bed

I would also like to see pictures of the modification for the bed. I am not very handy, but interested in how it can be done.

The jack knife sofa/sleeper in our 2307 Classic was pretty uncomfortable when we got it - in addition to the joint between the back & bottom, the bottom cushion had been replaced with high density foam but the back was original, so the bottom was very firm and the back very soft.

We replaced the foam on the backrest with foam of similar density, then had a full width 2" thick "topper" made of the same stuff with a cover made of automotive seat upholstery fabric. The person in back still has to crawl over the one in front to get out (usually not a problem - wife's a very sound sleeper who rarely wakes up during the night), and the bed's super comfortable. Since it's only the two of us, we leave the bed made up full time.

Hello everyone,

I started my walk-around bed modification/conversion project back in December 2023.

As I mentioned before in previous post, I got tired of rolling/climbing/jumping over my wife to get out of bed, so I modified the Jack knife Sofa/Sleeper that came from factory. The wife wanted to keep the usability of the couches to sit down on, so I made some mods that lets me convert it from sofa seating area to our main bed.

I believe 28ft and larger HiLo models came with full time walk-around beds as an option and are installed Front to Rear; but with this Old Gal being only a 25ft'r And the bed is installed Left to Right, I had to rack my brain on how to do this.

I cut the night stand cabinet in half and repositioned the bed between them- one on each side. That allowed me to move the bed away from the front wall gaining some access to walk around bed. I also cut and shortened the slider/support rod for the right side couch; that rod is what allows the couch to slide left to right, (it was originally bolted to the wall). I used a pipe elbow and a pipe floor flange to bolt it the floor. Mattress gets stowed away up in bunk bed area when in couch seating position.

Anyway I finished the project and it's working out really well (wife sleeps undisturbed when I have to get out of bed in the middle of the night)…lots of brownie points earned!! LOL.

Here are are some pictures...sorry I don't know why pics are sideways.

Very nice job! It looks like it will work exactly how you envisioned it. (Points earned are always nice!!)

Yep, looks like that worked out great. Nicely done!
