Assist handle wiring?
 

Hello all!
We have a 2006 23C “Classic”. A guard rail took out our plexiglass (?) assist handle (don’t ask:rolleyes:) and I bought a replacement from JandR. The replacement is wired (one black and one brown/white sticking out the back of the top handle plate), which I infer means when working, the handle illuminates. I do not think the old handle was wired but if it was it did not light up. Does anyone know how to go about wiring these handles and/or can point me to a wiring diagram? Thanks for your help.

Welcome to the forum! I don't recall mine being illuminated. You are talking about the one on the outside to the left of the door when you walk in, right? If yours was wired, you should probably be able to see inside the mounting if there are wires or not. Good luck!

Thanks. Yes, I am referring to that handle.I do not see wires extending from the exterior wall where the handle was mounted.I suppose it is possible if there were wires they were severed when the handle was ripped off upon impact and fell inside the wall. If there were wires, the original plexiglass handle never illuminated. I guess if I were to pursue this I could attempt to tap into the wires going to the exterior light to the left of the door controlled by the switch mounted inside. Seems like a lot of work for a “nice to have” thing.

Like Ruben's, my assist handle is not illuminated. I don't know that HiLo ever had this feature, but perhaps it's a "generic" handle that will also fit trailers that DO have illuminated handles. If I were you, I would not try to hook up the wiring.

Thank you, Jack. Vertically etched on the plexiglass in black letters is “Hi Lo Limited”. I do not know whether that signifies it’s an original Hi Lo part. The handle is longer than the original on my trailer by about six or seven inches. It might have come from a newer model than our 2006 (it is used). I will need to follow posted advice on how to fill the original screw holes and drill new holes as the original holes are deformed and enlarged, caused when the handle was impacted. At this point, I will focus on simply installing the new handle and skip any notion of wiring.

Our's a 2509C with the glass handle and like Jack's, our's not illuminated.

I highly recommend using Lexel caulk to fill the old holes. It comes in white or clear. You can get it through Amazon or at Ace Hardware. I think it holds better than silicone.

Thanks, Jack. I saw a discussion thread where someone recommended a product, Marine Tex epoxy. I do not have an informed opinion on what use but think whatever is used should be sand-able. I think that is right. Also, some products are more easy to clean than others. Unless I learn something new, I will go with your recommendation, Jack.

Bondo, is certainly sandable and paintable, but I don't think you need anything to provide structural strength like that. Those holes should be fairly small and you just need to fill them to keep water out. Lexel will do that. It is a rubbery compound that won't sand easily, but it is easily shaped, much like spackling paste, when you apply it.

I have a 2807C with the same handle...It is illuminated...Great in the winter...It is nice and warm when you have the light on...It is connected to the exterior light as you suspected....

Thanks for your reply. The type of handle we’ve been talking about does not appear to be that common, considering the responses from others. Sounds like a neat feature. That said, for now, I will focus on sealing the old holes and mounting this new (to me) handle. I might a burst of energy later and attempt to wire. Thanks again.
