Tank Level Indicator Panel

I have an older (1994) HiLo camper with the tank level indicator panel mounted next to the refrigerator. The indicator lights work but do not seem to indicate the correct tank level. For instance, when the freshwater tank is full, only one light appears on the panel - indicating the tank is only a quarter full. Is it likely the problem is in the panel itself, or maybe the sensors in the tanks? The battery charge indicator does seem to be working.

I'd suspect the sensors or the wiring to the sensors. In the freshwater tank, there's not much that will cause sensor problems, so I'd suspect wiring breaks or faulty connections. In the grey and black water tanks, accumulation of "sludge" can fool the sensors into seeing more in the tanks than is actually there, which would give you a more full reading than you actually have. If, however, you are seeing "empty" readings when the tanks are full, then I think the wiring is the problem again.

It's fairly easy to get to the wiring for the grey and black tanks in my trailer. Perhaps you will find that to be true in yours as well. Look under the trailer and along the sides of each of the tanks (mine are on the front sides). You should see wires connecting to what look like bolts (those are the sensors) and those connections can become corroded. You could disconnect, clean those, reconnect and see if your problem goes away.

I cannot get to the wiring for the fresh water tank in my trailer without removing the tank. Maybe you would have better luck.

Hope this helps.

Hope I remember correctly.

Seems to me that their are back posts on this. Can't remember the brand that some have installed. Our level indicators for black and grey don't work. We just live with it. We shower at campgrounds and try to use the camp BR as much as possible. This works for us.

Sam, I installed "Horst Miracle Probes" in my Black and Grey tanks. They have an extended insulator and sensor wires that minimize the effect of built-up crud on the walls that make the sensors "see" fuller than actual readings.

They were a little "fiddly" to put in, due to the restricted access, but they work well and I'm happy with them. I ordered them through Amazon, as I recall.

Tank Monitor Grounding problems

I also had monitor malfunctions on my 2000 Tow-Lite. All gauges (including the battery) were way off. Traced problem to the monitor using the trailer frame as the circuit electrical common (or ground). Electrical connections to the frame were rusty & corroded. Bought a 9 hole ground bar from the local home improvement store (Menards), mounted it behind the outside refrigerator access panel & ran a dedicated ground wire from the battery area. Then connected the monitor ground wire to that bar & problem solved. Hope your issue resolves that easily.
