New Owners of a 82 in Hermiston Oregon

New owners here in Eastern Oregon. We just drove 600 miles each way to to pick ours up in Fallon NV. for $500 this past Saturday (4/17), WHOOT!!, and only 2 inches of desert to sweep out of it. OK it's filthy but so far the furnace (blower at least) works, 3 lights, and the AC. It had 3 different sized tires on it and sure the door is falling off but.... NO water damage structurally it is sound and with the exception of a crunched cabinet above the fridge, a missing crank up vents no plastic on the AC at all it's intact. Not too shabby for an 82' last tagged on 2002. We are in planning to be road worthy this summer mid June early July to start our adventures. I'll let everyone know if it blows up in my face.

Updated: I've added photos of what we drove 1150 miles (round trip) to buy off of some random Craigslister
Wish us luck.

Hello, JandT and welcome! I moved your post to its own thread since it had nothing to do with the other new member's intro.

If the tires don't match, I suspect they are not reliable and should be changed to ones that are OEM spec. A tire blowout while towing is something you DO NOT want to experience! Several of our members have had that happen and it causes extensive damage and can result in personal injury to you or others too.

Glad to have you with us!

Thank you for moving me this is my first forum post ever I was unsure of the etiquette.
Being a Saturday when we picked ours up I had to pick a tire size at random and bought 4 trailer tires from Ace Hardware. I have no idea about the OEM tire size so I went with 14inch pre mounted tires with a rating of 1360 lbs each. the single 13 inch looked just too small and the 15 inch was a bear to get out so I split the difference. I should also mention there was a 12 inch blown out tire under the table when we got home. It towed great after that. Well, as long as I stayed at 65 or under that is, at 70 mph it has a tendency to turn into a kite behind us. Would a WDH help with that do you think?

Yes, you SHOULD get a Weight Distributing Hitch with anti-sway control. This will help your overall handling and braking.

Most trailer tires are not rated for speeds above 65 mph. I would not go past that limit unless you have the newer ones from Goodyear that are rated to 87 mph. Not knowing your trailer size, I THINK 14" tires with that weight rating will be OK. They give you about 5400# of weight carrying ability for the set.

A WDH will also let you set up the trailer so it rides level, which will distribute the load equally over the two axles. This is how you want the trailer to be towed.

Welcome to the forum.

Sounds like you had an adventure bringing the HiLo home. Have fun cleaning and repairing. DH has had to rebuild our door. Vaccum the furnice out and or blow it out with compressed air. View the operational videos. You will need to do some preventive maintenance. One thing i was never told was to roll up any curtains before lowering. The heavy ones at the BR. Post often and we will answer any questions you may have.

Hey, we just got a 1983 for $500! Looks like we are both in the same boat! Good luck to you!!!

Maintenance tip.

I would recommend that a trailer that is around five or six years old needs to have all the windows resealed with butyl tape. Use Lexel caulk on the outside. You Tube has a tutorial on how to do this. No one ever told me to do this. Then I had major wet walls to repair.
