Need tires for 1970 Hi-Lo travel trailer
 

I have a 1970 travel trailer and the tires are very old with dry rot. I want to replace the tires but it is difficult reading the information on the side of tire. Single axel tires. Any ideas?

I don't know what size tire that year HiLo had, so I can't tell you what the size is. Do you have a spare tire that might be easier to read?

Lacking any way for YOU to read the tire size, do you have a favorite tire shop that you would use to buy the tires from and to mount them? If so, they could probably figure out what you need. I get all my tires now from Discount Tire and can recommend them if you don't have a favorite and have one of their shops in your area.

remove and look on either side..maybe wet to make it more vis... if that fails Tire shop...Discount Tire is a fav of mine too

When we replaced our tires on our new to us 1996 26ft. classic we also purchased new rims. The old rims wouldn't allow for an upgraded tire size/classification. Load range. The old rims were for 60MPH max. Also remember about your spare.

May not be an issue for you, but it might be worth considering what max speed you're going to want to tow at as well.

We did a nearly 3K trip from northern CA to S. Dakota and back late this summer, and found that there were looong stretches on the plains where we could have legally (and comfortably) towed faster than the 65 mph speed rating our 2307C's near-new tires permitted.

Here on the west coast it's not an issue (CA's trailer limit is 55 - not that many stick to it - & I think 65 is the max in neighboring states) but the next time we head east, it would be nice to be able to cut transit times across some of the "wide open spaces" by running a bit faster in states where the posted limit is higher.

After we got back I did some checking into higher speed rated trailer radials, and they are available - Goodyear Marathon & Power King Towmax STR "ST" designated trailer tires can be used at sustained speeds up to 75 mph at the proper inflation rates - you can find available sizes on Tire Rack's web site (https://www.tirerack.com/tires/types...at.jsp?perf=TS)

Hi, I have a 1970. Single axle. I'm not sure if it has the original wheels, but probably. the tires on it are 75/205r 14. The R means that they are radials and 14 inch. I live in Indiana, and Big discount tire is the place to go if you have one close to you. The ones I had on when I purchased it about ten years ago; The tires on it began with an F. they were dry rot. The guy at the shop told me they were very old and that letter system was not being used for a very long time.

In the 1973 brochure in this forum's library for the Hi-Lo single axle, it states "Tire Size: 8.25 x 14." I see no brochure with specs for 1970.

Have you looked on www.etrailer.com , they carry almost every type of wheel and tire.

I think that may have been the size of mine when I purchased it 10 years ago. I took it in to Discount Tire, and the attendant just looked at them and asked me how long I had those? I told him I didn't know how old they were, but they came from a 1970 Hilo. That was when he told me they hadn't been using that number system for many years. I remember they had an "F" in front of the numbers, and they were in very bad condition. I believe he measured them, and put on some Carlyle's. The tires are a very tight fit to get them in the tire wells. I have to deflate them to get them installed.
