The back left area of my Hi Lo does not raise to it's full height. Any input ?

My left wheel on my 1509 Hi Lo lost grease and I think some bearings as I drove downhill on I 70 west of the Eisenhower tunnel. A couple signaled me to pull over and I found the wheel bearings, brakes, etc. smoking from overheating. My camper is now awaiting a new axle complete with brakes, wheel bearings, etc.

I had both wheels packed with new grease and seals in May. I have since driven about 5,000 miles during trips in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana with no obvious issues. I wash my Hi Lo following every trip and have never noticed any grease on either wheel.

Why was only the left wheel damaged and not the right one?

When going downhill, particularly on steep grades I put light to moderate pressure on the brake then release without holding down for any length of time to avoid overheating and potential seizing or worse.
