Yes, Amy - The original fluid in the reservoir is Dexron II, and that's what the HiLo manuals call for. However, I don't think you can find it anymore. Dexron III, IV, and V are acceptable...

Amy, YOU may have low hydraulic fluid. Check it with the top down. It should be within 1 to 1/2" from the top in the reservoir. Use a bent straw or something similar as a "dipstick".

That sounds like a leak or low hydraulic fluid. My guess is a leak past the seals that keeps it from transferring pressure to the lift ram. I'm sorry for your disappointment! Hope you didn't travel...
