What brands and types of extension mirrors are you using for towing?

RCREYES 02-10-2011 11:04 AM

I am using CIPA mirrors on my 2500HD GMC. They snap on to the existing mirrors. You can check these out. https://www.safetowingstore.com/Produ...ductCode=70007

I am still looking for some. While my wife and I were camping in Kentucky this past fall, we went into a RV shop in Cadiz,KY and they had what looked great but would have to order them for my Tacoma. I am going to check with a local RV dealer here and see what they have. I'll let you know what I find.

RichR 02-10-2011 12:20 PM

I have looked extensively for mirrors made to fit the Tacoma and so far I have had no luck. The manufacturers don't appear to make anything for imports. I have the mirrors that mount to the truck's mirrors with rubber straps. They are okay but they need to stick out a bit further to see around the Hi-Lo. I wish that telescoping mirrors would be made for the Tacoma and would be offered as part of the towing package.

Mirrors

I hear ya.I just called my local RV dealer and he said, as far as he knew, there were none available. Guess that I'll just have to stick with my strap ons that I currently have. Maybe,I'll try to modify them a little to stick out a little further.

NDgent 02-10-2011 02:09 PM

I hope we are still discussing mirrors?

campthewestcoast 02-10-2011 03:36 PM

I have a 2006 toyota tacoma, right now I'm using strap-on mirrors. I'm very unhappy with them, I wish there was something better on the U.S. market!

I found some! I seached caravan (R.V. in Europe) mirrors.
Check out ; ORAmirror.com model : Rossa (with a support arm so they don't vibrate in the wind). They are a bit pricey, but I guest you get what you pay for. I wanted to get some opinions before I fork out that much money.

Anyone see them?

RichR 02-10-2011 05:36 PM

Could you check that website address and re-post it? I came up with something all together different from mirrors. Thanks!

I am seriously thinking of ordering a pair of CIPA 11960 Premium Universal Towing Mirrors for my Nissan Frontier, they are available from Amazon for $25.00 each with free shipping Amazon.com. Are any of you familiar with these in actual use?

I used them on my Ford F250 and let me tell you, they are a complete waste of money. They vibrated while in use, they were difficult to get adjusted and due to their design, they would eventually move in the wind and have to be re-adjusted. The mirror face is quite small and it was hard to see anything in them. I used them for one trip then threw them away. I didn't want to even give them away they are that bad of a design.

I moved to a model made by CIPA that slides over the existing mirror. They wern't much better but they were usable.

Ditto on these strap-on mirrors, I had to strap them on so tight to keep them from moving it deformed the plastic mirror housing. Cipa don't make the slide on style for tacoma's. I need to find a U.S. supplier for the Rossa mirror at oraproducts.com.au

Were they the CIPA style I illustrated in the previous post or the CIPA strap-on one's illustrated below? I have been using some similar to the ones illustrated below, which I purchased at KRAGEN and they have the problems you mentioned. They slip off and it is impossible to get them really securely attached to the OEM mirrors. Please clarify!

I've got the kind you are showing and they are junk

JMDoering 02-11-2011 04:42 PM

Les,

Believe I wrote of these, and gave a more extensive description, once before. I've tried a lot of different mirrors over the years, but for the past four I've been using Tow-N-See mirrors, made by Horst Dynamics, Inc. I really like them! Check 'em out at: Amazon.com: Horst Dynamics Inc. Flat Tow 'N See™ Mirror: Sports & Outdoors

One of the customer reviews at Amazon is highly critical and talks about the mirrors bouncing around excessively. I wonder if that reviewer had some mount issues with the vehicle mirror. I use these on a 2007 Suburban, attaching them to the standard power mirrors that came with the vehicle, and I've never experienced excessive vibration. In fact, these are the most stable and secure mirrors I've had since the old tripod fender mount mirrors of an earlier era. They are WAY more stable than any of the many strap-on mirrors I've tried over the years.

I used the 11960 Premium Universal Towing Mirrors and they were junk. They use plastic clips that thin straps run through. The clips grab onto the lip of the mirror shell and you rotate the knob to tighten up the mirror. I ended up breaking one clip the first time I tightened them as they wouldn't get tight enough to feel secure.

...or if your wife uses your side view mirrors to put her make up on, and while doing so, you back your truck up to hook up to your Hi-Lo and your wife gets lipstick on her one tooth, you might be a redneck. Here's your sign.

These eagle vision mirrors may be a copy of McKesh mirrors, They may work. I read alot of reviews on these and people praise these but only if you get the opitional round convex mirror. A couple of points I was thinking about, The way it clips on the top door wouldn't it damage the outside plastic window trim, scratch the paint, scratch the window(i do like the option of rolling down the window while driving) How stable is this thing with the window down. With this clip on mirror, there's no break-away pivot point so if gets hit it would cause more damage than good. Les

You've got a point there Les. They kind of look like the mirrors you used to be able to rent years ago from U-haul. I am going to call them tomorrow and get some more information. Being we are heading out to the West Coast, around the 12th of April, I want to be ready as soon as possible.

TrulyOregon 02-21-2011 03:41 PM

We ordered the McKesh mirrors yesterday. We hope to use them during spring break when we head to the coast. Will report how they perform and if there's anything close to paint chipping, etc.
We had been using inexpensive strap-on mirrors purchased from Camping World. They worked okay, but you really couldn't see the back of the trailer very well. My/our philosophy is "you can't scrimp or put a price tag on safety."

I thanked her for her honesty and will call Hensley tomorrow.

Has anyone tried the Cipa or camco suction cup mirrors?

I really haven't heard any good information on them. As a matter of fact, I talked to the people an Hensely today about the McKesh mirrors and I will be ordering them tomorrow.

The guy I spoke to uses them personally on his GMC and says he really likes them. They ought to be nice for $130.00 a pair

TrulyOregon 02-22-2011 06:07 PM

Just ordered the McKesh this weekend and they shipped today. Paid the 130 plus ordered the convex as well. Heard that they really come in handy. Also learned after the fact that it pays to order an extra set of pads for the arms, just in case one comes off on while on a trip. I'm just going to wait and see the mirrors and judge whether that might be a problem or whether something else can be substituted. Right now I've been using the cheap strap-ons but they really don't provide a good view while travelling. I've heard nothing but good reviews on the McKesh.

TJM,
Sorry, forgot to answer your question. We ordered the mirrors from the Hensley store.

Mckesh mirror question

Is the reason for such good reviews on Mckesh mirrors is that it's the only good option for the tacoma truck? If there is anyone using them at this time, how stable are they at freeway speeds with the window down fully? I just want to keep full operation of my windows.

TrulyOregon 03-02-2011 12:25 AM

McKesh mirrors

Received my mirrors from Hensley today and I was impressed by the quality. They are solid and installed, they'll withstand all freeway speeds without a problem. They're easy to install and remove, they have quality pads to protect the finish, and are fairly simple to put together with one exception. The instructions sheet should have had a couple photos rather than just referencing part numbers. Had to rely on the picture on the box to verify whether or not I had things accurate. I'll try to get a couple pictures.

How about window operation? Also, looks like you have to fold your stock mirrors in?

JackandJanet 03-02-2011 10:26 AM

I used mirrors like the ones Frank installed when I was towing with a Nissan Frontier. They worked fine, but there's a few "caveats":
1. If it rains, check and probably tighten the straps. If they are nylon (mine were) they stretch when wet.
2. I put clear plastic tape on the doors under the point where the pads sit. If the pads move at all while driving (and they will), and there is any dirt underneath (there will be), you will get scuff marks on your door if it is not protected. Loose straps will increase the rubbing tendency. I simply left the plastic tape in place when I was not towing - it hardly showed up. When I sold the truck, I peeled the tape off and the paint was perfect.
3. My mirror instructions cautioned against rolling the windows up and down with the mirrors attached. In my case, the clamps touched the outside surface of the widows slightly, but there was no damage caused by the few times I moved the windows.
Hope this helps!

- Jack

TrulyOregon 03-02-2011 12:22 PM

Thanks, Jack. I haven't used the mirrors for towing or beyond installation so I'll know more after our next outing. I just folded the mirror in for the picture. I guess you could keep it in for towing purposes if you wanted to.

It is a green 98 TRD, sound familiar? Gets better, Hi-LO is a 22 ft classic. The photo of your set-up could pass as my own.
