Lead acid batteries go dead over time, even when not connected, a float charger prevents that from happening. Yes they are left on all the time.
Here, are a couple very good articles about batteries.These articles are from Progressive Dynamics but almost all manufactures of RV battery chargers now make them the same way, 4 stage charging. The charger that comes in Hi-Lo s is a single stage charger. Battery Basics Battery Management 101 |

I have a stupid little 12v solar panel I bought for $20 (coleman) that has been doing a pretty good job of keeping my battery charged while it's been sitting in the storage lot...
I'm not all that concerned about the battery yet, I won't need it that much sitting at the campground hooked up to shore power... no need spending a bunch on a good deep cycle that won't see much actual use... |
